Be it known that I, HORACE HAsrINos CHESBROU GH, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Seattle, in the county of King and .State of VYVashington, have invented certain newiand useful Improvements in Cash-Drawers, of which the 4production of simple and efficient means for locking a movable cash-draweror the like in suoli amanner as to require the use of a salesticket or the like before it can be opened and the embodiment with the receptacle of essential features of adaptability,utility, and general efficiency which render the receptacle of especial value to merchants receiving cash in instalments.

The abovefinentioned and other objects' equally as desirable are attained by the constructions, combination, and arrangements ofV parts as disclosed on the drawings, set forth in this specification, and succinctly pointed out in the appended claims.

With reference' to the drawings filed here-- with and bearing like reference characters` for corresponding parts throughout, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the entire device as preferably embodied and indicated with the cash-drawer in open position and-the cover for the ticket-receiving section of the.

Fig. 3 is a view of the receptacle in vertical longitudinal section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1 with the cover of the ticket-receiving section closed and the drawer fully shut, and Fig. #l is a view in perspective of the holder for the sales-ticket with a ticket in place and `a portion of the drawer or movable carrier for the holder indicated in relative position.

This invention includes a suitable case, as

10, a drawer, as 12, movably mounted in the case and adapted for holding cash, and

operatively-mounted means to normally lock the drawer and arranged for operation bythe movement Of a sales-ticket, as 9, or the like to release said drawer.

In the Ipresent embodiment case 10 comprises a rectangular bottom, as 11, a back end .wall15, oppositely-disposed side walls 16 and 16', the latter of which is preferably formed with a rectangular notch, as 17, by cutting away the upper front corner portion, a top, as 18, which extends from the rback end wall to the back edge of said notch at one side edge and is preferably formed with a forwardlyprojecting portion, as 19, at the opposite side substantially half as wide as the top and extending forwardly about one-third of the distance to the front end of the side walls, and a front wall 19 along the front margin of said top, which projects downwardly to the bottom of the notch 17. As now considered, a horizontally-disposed partition 2O is arranged across this case, which extends from the front wall to the back and is placed with the bottom surface even with the lower edge `as viewed in side elevation and is formed substantially equal in width to the projection .1!) and is provided with an apron 22 along the under surface of the top wall, which is equal in Width to the front wall of the case. In the lower compartment of this case the cash-drawer 12 slidably mounted, so that it can be moved forwardly and backwardly, and this drawer is rendered substantially rectangular as viewed in plan and' extends in length from the back edge wall of the notch 19 to the back wall ofthe case and, as now considered, is rendered substantially equal in width to the width of the compartment and is divided longitudinally into two sections, as 24 and 25, by a suitable vertically-disposed partition 26, arranged directly beneath the inner side edge of the projection 1). In the present embodiment the section 25 of the drawer is reserved for cash or the IOO like, while the section 24 is conveniently employed as the carrier for a suitable holder, as 27, adapted to support a lsales ticket for movement, so that it is thereby made to operate the means employed to normally lock the drawer. This holder, as now considered, comprises a rectangular plate 27', disposed between the side walls of section 25 andV inclined upwardly and rearwardly slightly from the perpendicular, so that the ticket 9 will remain in position thereon, and the plate is formed with a notch 28 of considerable depth in the top edge and a forwardly-extending` lip 29 along the forward lower corner. In the outer side wall of section 25, at the end of the holder, is provided a slot, as 30, through which the sales-ticket is passed to the holder. This slot is inclined at the same angle as the plate 27 and extends downwardly to the lip 29 and is formed with oppositely-disposed notches 3l in the side edges, which are each of suitable size to receive the tip of either the thumb or foreinger of the operator, and in the side wall of the case 10, which lies directly opposed to this slot, a suitable transversely-disposed aperture 32 is provided at the point opposite the position occupied by the slot when the drawer stands closed, so that the sales-ticket can be inserted through the slot to the holder.

In the present embodiment the means employed to normally lock the drawer includes a vertically-disposed catch 14, pivotally mounted adjacent the back wall of the case on a horizontally-disposed pin, as 33, conveniently mounted on the partition 20, so that the hook or head of the catch will project downwardly into the drawer and the stem thereof project upwardly into the upper compartment of the case, and a horizontally-disposed catch-pin or the like, as 34, is secured to the drawer rearwardly of the catch in a suitable position to normally engage the hook on this catch after the drawer has moved outwardly a predetermined distance, and thereby prevent it from bein g fully opened. This catch is operatively connected to anA operatively-mounted trip or the like, as a vertically-disposed lever 37, which is supported midway its length on a suitable fulcrum, as a horizontally-disposed pin 3S, secured to partition 20 forwardly of the catch, with one end of the lever extending downwardly into the section 24 of the drawer directly in front of the notch 28 and in the path of movement of the sales-ticket 9 when in place on the holder, so that when the drawer is moved outwardly the ticket will be brought into contact with this end of the lever, and thereby made to act to swing the lever on its fulcrum, and. thereby operate catch 14 and throw it clear of the catch-pin 34, so that the drawer will be free for full opening movement. As now considered, the catch and lever are operatively connected by means of a suitable rod 50, which is pivoted to the upper end of each, and these parts are yieldingly held in normal position by means of a suitable spring, as 40, which consists of a section of resilient wire seated at one end on the partition 2O and engaged with the connectingrod by its opposite end.

, In the present instance the forward portion of the cash-receiving section 25 of the drawer is covered with a movable top, as 41, preferably consisting' of a rectangular plate which extends across said section and is greater in length than the length of the primary opening movement of the drawer. This top is set slightly below the top edge of the walls of the drawer and conveniently hinged at the rear edge to the walls of the section 25, so that when the drawer stands partly open, as permitted by the rearward placement of the pin 33, as required to allow the head of the catch 14 to swing clear from sam e as the drawer is closing, this top cannot then be raised, as the forward end4 wall of the case will stand opposed to upward movement thereof, but the drawer will then stand open sufficiently to allow papers or the like to be deposited in the drawer upon this top.

A suitable notch, as 44, is formed in the rear end wall of section 24 of the drawer to allow this wall to pass clear of the catch 14 as the drawer is opened and closed, and a suitable pull, as a knob 45, is secured to the forward end wall of section 25, by which the drawer can be conveniently opened and closed.

This receptacle is of especial value to merchants who dispose of goods on the installment plan, as it requires the use of a suitable sales-ticket, as 9, or the like to render the cash-receiving section of the drawer accessible, whereby the receiver of cash from a customer will be made to remember to enter the name of the customer and the amount rcceived upon one of these tickets, which is then inserted through the wall of the case to the holder and as the drawer is moved outwardly serves to trip the catch 14 through the medium of the lever 37, and as the drawer is closing this lever stands in the path of movement of the inserted ticket and serves to tip it forwardly, and thereby cause it to drop from the holder upon the bottom of the drawer, so thatthe holder is ready to receive a succeeding ticket when the drawer stands closed.

An operation of this device would occur substantially as follows: Granting the receipt ot' an installment of cash, the receiver takes one oi' the sales tickets, as 9, and writes thereon the name of the customer and the amount of the payment and then places the ticket 011 the holder by inserting it through the slot 30. The drawer 12 is then pulled outwardly and the ticket strikes against the lever 37 and causes it to swing and trip the catch 14, so that the catch-pin will clear the head thereof, and when the ticket clears the lever the spring 40 serves to return the catch and lever to normal position. When the drawer is fully opened, the top 41 of the cashreceiving section can be raised and the money ICS IIO

received deposited in the section, and the drawer is then closed and during its closing movement the lever 37 serves to displace the inserted ticket from the holder and when the head of the catch 14; rides clear of the catchpin the spring 40 serves to again return same to normal position.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent of the United States of America, is-

l. In a receptacle of the nature indicated; the. combination of a case, a drawer movably mounted therein, and operatively-mounted drawer-locking means arranged for operation by the movement of a sales-ticket.

2. In a receptacle of the nature indicated; the combination of a case, a drawer movably mounted therein, a ticket-holder carried by the drawer, and operative drawer -locking means arranged for operation as the drawer is moved through the medium of a sales-ticket seated on said holder.

3. In a receptacle of the nature indicated; the combination of a case, a Idrawer movably mounted therein, a ticket-holder carried by the drawer, an operative drawer-locking catch arranged to normally allow a primary movement of said drawer, an d catch operating means arranged for operation through the means of a ticket seated on said holder, by and during said primary action of the drawer.

i. In a receptacle of the nature indicated; the combination of a case, a drawer movably mounted therein, a ticket-holder carried by said drawer, reciprocally-mounted drawerlocking means yieldin gly held in norm al position and arranged for operation through the means of a sales-ticket seated on said holder, by and during a predetermined, primary opening movement of the drawer, and means to displace said ticket.

5. In a receptacle of the nature indicated; the combination of a case, a drawer movably mounted therein, a catch-pin on the drawer, a reciprocal catch operatively mounted on said case and adapted to normally engage said pin after a primary movement of the drawer, a ticket-holder arranged on said drawer, and catch operating means arranged for operation through the medium of a ticket removably seated on said holder, by and during said primary action of the drawer.

6. In a receptacle of the nature indicated; the combination of a case, a drawer movably mounted therein, a catch-pin on the drawer, a reciprocal catch operatively mounted on said case and adapted to be normally engaged with said pin by a primary movement of the drawer, a ticket-holder on said drawer, and a lever operatively connected to said catch and arranged for operation through the medium of a ticket resting on said holder, by and during said primary movement of the drawer.

7. In a receptacle of the nature indicated; the combination of a case, a movably-mounted drawer, a ticket -holder on said drawer, a drawer-locking catch arranging to allow a primary movement of said drawer, and a lever operatively related to said catch and arranged in the path of movement of a ticket seated on said holder as said drawer is moved primarily.

8. In a receptacle of the nature indicated; the combination of a case, having an aperture in one side wall, and open at the front end, a drawer slidably mounted in said case and having a ticket-slot in one side wall and normally registering with said aperture, a ticketholder mounted in said drawer at the slot, and operatively mounted drawer locking means arranged to allow of a primary movement of said drawer and to be operated through the medium of a sales-ticket carried on said holder, by and during said primary movement of the drawer.

9. In a receptacle of the nature indicated; the combination of a case, a movably-mounted drawer, a ticket-holder in said drawer, a ticket-holder in said drawer comprising a plate inclined from the perpendicular and having a notch vin the top edge and a lip at the base, a drawer-locking catch operatively mounted on the case and arranged to normally allow of a primary movement of said drawer, and a lever operatively connected with said catch and mounted on said casev in alinement with said notch.

In a receptacle of the nature indicated; the combination of a case comprising a base, a back end wall, opposite side walls one of which is formed with a notch at the forward upper corner, a top terminating at the back edge of the notch and having a forwardlyextending projection, and a front end wall along the front edge of said top and extending downwardly to the base of said notch, a substantially L-shaped cover at the end of said projection equal in width thereto and having an apron at the inner side equal in width to the depth of said front wall, a drawer slidably fitting in said case beneath the front end wall and equal in length to said top, a top hinged in the forward end of the drawer at the side opposite said extension, and an operative drawer-locking catch arranged to permit of a primary movement of said drawer.
