PATENT OFFICE.
TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 733,925, dated July 14, 1903.
Application filed January-13,1902. Serial No. 89,580. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
: Be it known that I, LoUIs WELKER', Sr., a resident of Williamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
My invention relates to an improvement in tables, the object of the invention being to provide simple and eflicient means for connectin g the members of a divided pillar to the table-top sections in such manner as to pre vent said membersof the divided pillar from sagging and to enable the ready adjustment of thepillar-sections without danger of forcing pillar out of its proper vertical position.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features ofconstruction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more'fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims. I
In the accompanying'drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation, partly in section, illustrating my improvementv Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view showing the central pillar in section, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of brace 11- detached.
1 represents the central supporting pillar or standard, which is made in the form of sections, each having diverging feet 2 at their lower ends to support the table in proper position. On the upper ends of these pillar-sect10ns bridges 3 are rigidly secured, and the latter are securedjgo the lower faces of the top sections 4 at their meeting edges. The top sections arepreferably provided wit -the ordinary depending rim 5 and are see red on slides 6 of any approved construction locate'd atfthe ends of bridges A central-leg bridge 7 is secured at its respective ends to two of the slides and is secured between its ends on a center leg 8, inclosed within the pillar when the table is contracted, and to permit the sections of the pillar to come snugly together they are notched or grooved, as shown at 9, to receive center-leg bridge 7, as clearly shown in the accompanying drawings. In all tables of this character heretofore made the pillar-sections have a tendency to and, in fact, do become sprung apart at their lower ends, and to prevent this and to remedy the same if it should occur I provide braces 10 and 11, as will now be explained.
The brace 10 consists of a metal bar perforated at its ends to receive rivets or bolts'12 and pivotallysecure the respective. ends of the bar between parallel lugs or cars 13 on brackets 14, one of which is secured to one table-top section and the other to a section of the pillar 1, the pivotal connection of the bar with the bracketsenabling the bar to be secured at any angle desired and to any point on the 'pillar howeverirregular the surface thereof may be. p
The brace 11 is constructed precisely like brace 10, except that it is made in two sec tions connected by a turnbuckle 15 to permit adjustment of the brace longitudinally to force the pillar-sections together when sprung apart and also to secure just the proper tension of the braces on the pillar-sections to maintain them rigid.
I might of course employ two adjustable braces, if desired; but I prefer to employ only one, for the reason that with but one adjustable brace there is no possibility of an inexperienced persons forcing the pillar out of a vertical position, while with two adjustable braces this is liable to occur, to the great injury of the table.
A great many slight changes might be resortedto in the general form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details set forth, but'consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
' Having fullydescribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a table, vided table-top and a divided central pillar, of braces ,each attached at one end to a section of the pillar and at the other end to one of the table-top sections.
2. In a table, the combination with a central pillar comprising two sections'movable he combination with a direlatively to each other, and a fable-top comprising two sections secnred respectively to the pillar-section's, of a brace connecting each top section with a pillar-section.
3. In a table, the combination with a pillar comprising two sections movable relatively to each other, and a top comprising two sections secured to the respective pillar-sections, of a brace connecting each pillar-section with the top section secured thereto, said braces being pivotally connected with the pillar and top sections.
4. In a table, the combination-with a pillar comprising two sections movable relatively to each other and a top comprising twosections secured to the respective pillar-sections, of braces connecting the pillar-sections and the top sections secured thereto, one of said braces comprising. longitudinally adjustable sections. p
- In testimony whereof I have signed this specification 'in the presence of two subscrib-- mg witnesses.
