PATENT OFFICE.
PENClL HOLDER AND GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 733,172, dated July '7, 1903.
Application filed April 11, 1902. Serial No. 102,433. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom, it 11mg concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL Jonson Donn- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have made certain'new and useful Improvements in Pencil Holders and Guards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in pencil holders and guards, and particularly in that class of such devices which comprises a tubular body having an eraser at one end and fitted at its other end to receive a pencil; and the invention consists in the special construction of the tubular body in connection with the rubber eraser and the form at the end of the tube which receives the pencil, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view ofthe holder, a pencil being inserted therein in position for writing. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the pencil being reversed with its point incased within the guard, both said Figs. 1 and 2 showing the rubber eraser with its holder solid or otherwise secured in one end of the tubular body. Fig. 3 shows the rubber tip held directly in the end of the tubular body, and Fig. 4: is a detail perspective view of the open end of the tubular body which receives the pencil-tip.
The holder and guard is shown as composed of a narrow strip, preferably of metal, wound spirally upon a core or otherwise to bring it to an approximately tubular form, with a narrow slot between the adjacent rounds of the coil to give elasticity to the tube in a longitudinal direction and also to permit a slight contraction and expansion of the tube in gripping the pencil. The strip may be made of any suitable weight of metal and be oxidized,
nickle-plated, or otherwise finished, as desired, and the width of a strip A, as well as of the spiral slot B, produced between the adjacent edges of, the strip, may be varied to suit. The rubber tip 0 may be secured directly in the end of the tubular body, as shown in Fig. 3, or the metal holder D may be fitted on the rubber tip and soldered or otherwise secured at the end of the tubular body A, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In the practical application of my invention the holders and guards may be made in different sizes to fit different sizes of pencil and may be made of any suitable length to suit the market. 7
At the end which receives the pencil the strip A is sloped off at A on a gradual curve, so as to avoid any projecting point which might injure the finger of the user. It will also be understood that the direction of the spiral may be varied, and it may in practice be desirable to make some of the holders on a right spiral and others on a left spiral.
It will be noticed thatin use the spiral body will expand slightly to receive the pencil, which may be turned thereinto with a screw action, and the pencil may be conveniently withdrawn and reversed end for end to be adjusted for use or for carrying in the pocket.
In the use of the guard it will be seen it is flexible and gives a certain elasticity to the pencil, which is very much desired by some users.
The device is simple, permits a ready insertion of the pencil and the reverse thereof end for end whenever desired, provides an elastic holder for the pencil, and is so formedadjacent to the pencil-tip as to avoid any projecting point at the free edge of the holder.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is"
1. As an improved article of manufacture the pencil holder and guard herein described,
comprising the tubular body composed of a strip of metal wound spirally and having its adjacent rounds separated, provided in one end of said body with a rubber eraser and having the spiral strip at the opposite end of thebody sloped off at its extremity at the juncture of its end and outer side whereby
