solid back, but which is less expensive as well as lighter and more elastic than a comb of that character.

A further object is to improve the end or guard teeth of the comb.

These objects I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, ,in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a comb constructed in accordance with my invention.

Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar section showing the toothed bar and back of the comb before the same have been united, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of one end of the comb.

In the usual method of manufacturing combs of celluloid having heavy backs a strip of the material as thick as the back of thecomb must be employed, portions of this strip being removed on each side so as to reduce the thickness of the same to the extent de sired for the toothedportion of the comb, the

portions thus removed as well as those removed in the formation of the teeth being waste, which has but little value as compared with the original cost of the material, the lat ter being quite expensive. In order to overcome this objection, I devised the invention forming the subject of my Patent No. 686,050, dated November 5, 1901, wherein the back of the comb was formed by a strip of material independent of that forming the toothed bar of the comb, this strip being bent around the back of said toothed bar and cemented or f welded to the latter at its edges, the back being free from contact with the toothed bar except at and near said united edges of the same and the hollow back being suitably closed at the ends. This method of manufacture produced a comb which was much cheaper and more elastic than a comb with solid back, and one object of my present invention is to further cheapen the manufac- Serial No. 101,222. ture without detracting from the value of the comb as compared with that previously patented. 7

' In carrying out my present invention I form in the toothed bar 1 of the comb longitudinal grooves 2, extending throughout the length of said bar close to the roots of the teeth, as shown inFigs. 3 and 4, and Iso form the bent strip 3, which constitutes the back of the comb, that strip is in its normal condition, almost meet or wil1,at any rate, be closer than the distance between the bases of the opposite grooves 2 in the toothed bar 1 of the comb. the bent strip 3 are then pressed apart until the grooved portion of the bar 1 can pass between the same,and said strip 3 is then slipped longitudinallyonto said grooved bar,the lower edges of the strip, owing to the elasticity of the same, fitting-snugly into the grooves 2 and tightly hugging the bar 1. formed will not only retain its seat by its own resiliency upon the body of the comb, but when the comb is bent, as frequently happens in use, this resiliency will cause the relation between the back and body to remain fixed, and the back and body will straighten to normal shape without any change in the position of the parts. The open ends of the back of the comb are then closed by disks 4, firmly cemented or welded in place at the ends of the comb. By preference these disks 4 form part of the end or guard teeth 5 of the comb, as shown in'Figs. 1 and 4, such teeth being therefore more elastic than the heavy teeth usually formed at the ends of the toothed bar of the comb. By thus making the end or guard teeth of the comb separate from the toothed bar 1, moreover, the manufacture of said toothed bar is facilitated, since a strip of any desired length can be uniformly toothed, whereas in the ordinary practice thejtooth ing-machine must be set so as to form heavy teeth at predetermined intervalsand skilled and expensive labor must be employed for running the machines The heavy end or guard teeth must also be bent after their formation, so that their inner edges shall be straight, and this bending materially weakens the teeth.

Having thus described my invention, I

claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A comb of celluloid or like material having a toothed bar with longitudinal grooves on each side, and a hollow back consisting of a bent strip of like material having resilient sides with their lower edges seated in said grooves and retained in position by the hold of the strip upon the bar due to the resiliency of said strip, substantially as specified.

2. The combination in a comb, of a toothed bar of celluloid or like material having longitudinal grooves in its opposite sides, a back teeth forming part of said disks, substantially as specified.
