WIRE STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 10, 1910.
Application filed November 29, 1907. Serial No. 404,336.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, TrroMxs GATOH hInLIsH and MILTON lVALLAcn GATOH, citizens of the United States, and residents, respectively, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, and of Mansfield, in the county of Bichland and said State of Ohio, have jointly invented new and useful Improvements in IVire Structures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wire-structures and more especially to those adapted for use in the manufacture of rat-traps, gradingscreens and the like, and its object is to provide a channeled rib having side flanges or feet along its open edges and notched openings having integral clips or flaps adapted to close or fold upon intersecting mesh-wires seated in said notched openings, whereby an extremely simple, readily made and applied structure is formed.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a wire-structure embodying the invention herein, a few mesh-wires being shown seated and secured in place in several parallel strengthening ribs; Fig. 2, a perspective view of a fragmentary portion of a strip of metal showing the manner in which it is prepared prior to forming into its final channeled rib-shape, the clips or flaps being shown in their open position and the dotted lines in the view showing wherein the strip is bent to channel and strengthen the same and to present the notches in their wireseating position; Fig. 3, a perspective view of a fragmentary portion of a rib constructed ready for use; and Fig. 4, a transverse section taken on the dotted-line a, a of Fig. 3, but with the clip or flap shown in seating-place 011 a mesh-wire, (the latter not being shown in Fig. 3.)
In these views, 1 indicates a flat strip of metal from which the rib is derived; 2, each one of a series of upturned clips or flaps along said strip of metal, openings 8 result-- ing in said strip when the metal is out along three edges to form said clips or flaps 2; l, 4, notches made in the strip along the side edges of said openings 3; and 5, 5, lateral feet or flanges extending from the open edges of the rib when the latter is made into grooved or channeled form, as shown at 6, by bending the strip along the series of parallel dotted-lines seen in Fig. 2.
I'Vhen the channeled and flanged rib has been formed, the said notches 4, i are disposed upward at either side the respective openings 8 to receive and seat the meshwires 7 at the intersections of the latter with the respective ribs. The mesh-wires having been duly seated in the respective notches 4, the clips or flaps 2 are each bent forward and laid down in contact with the said mesh-wires so as to firmly secure the latter in their seated or locked position, free from any lateral or undue torsional strain or accidental displacement.
In Fig. 1 is shown a series of parallel mesh-wires secured in seated-place in several adjoining parallel ribs, except that one of the clips or flaps in the rib to the left is not downturned or laid flat on the lowermost mesh-wire and, also, that three of the clips or flaps in the rib to the right have not been downturned, nor is the lowermost wire extended into seating or looking place in said latter-named rib. This manner of illustrating the structure is believed to bring out the invention herein to the best advantage and to more distinct view.
The channeled form of rib having the side flanges or feet 2 is extremely simple and strong and is especially adapted to straight or flat work where stiffness is most desired, although it is well adapted to ordinary curved work of easy arc. The said flanges or feet 2 form broad or extended side bearings or platforms along the open edges of the channeled-rib for the 1nesh wires to firmly rest on and they take more or less strain olf the notched portions of the channeled part of the rib.
Vi e claim As a new article of manufacture, a device of the character described comprising a plane channeled-rib having a series of openings at suitable intervals apart therein, lateral flanges or footextensions along the open side edges of said channeled-rib, a semesh-Wires at intersections to close the latrles of chps or flaps respectively provided tel 111 place.
