BOOK-COVER PROITECII'OR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 732,524, dated June 30, 1903.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD PAYSON CUSH- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Cover Proof the books from rough or continuous use.

Briefly stated, the cover-protector invented by me comprises a back section formed of a sheet of flexible material, preferably a soft finished leather, though any suitable fabric may be used, said section having at either end a pocket which is adapted to receive the board or cover of a book, the inner flap or side of the pocket being formed of a single piece and covering the inside of the book board or cover completely, the flap of one or both of said pockets having a separable connection with the back of the protector to admit of the ready insertion and removal of a book.

In the drawings which accompany and form a part of this specification I have shown a book-cover protector embodying my inven tion, the two forms of protector shown differingin some details of construction, as will be pointed out.

The said drawings comprise Figure 1, which is a perspective view of a protector with a book in position in dotted outline; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the protector with the separable flap of the cover-receiving pocket thrown back; Fig. 3, illustrating a slightly different arrangement of flap; and Fig. 4, which is a detail view of a portion of the protector, illustrating a method of fastening the flap portion of the pocket slightly different from that shown in the other views.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, like numerals indicating like parts in the several views, 1 indicates the back section of the protector, rectangular blank. At one end of said section 1 is a pocket, preferably formed by a blank or pocket section '2, formed of a single piece and secured to section 1 at its outer edge and its two ends by other suitable manner. At the other end of the back section 1 is a second pocket, formed of a pocket-section 3 similar to the section 2, which section 3 in the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is stitched at its outer edge and at one end to the said back section 1,but having at its other end a free flap 4, unattached to the section 1 of the protector. I find it advisable to run the line of stitches or other securing means a short distance along said unattached flap l from the outer edge of the protector, as shown at 5, thus giving a corner-pocket which the corner of the book cover or board engages so aswhich, as shown, is a singlestitching or in any to maintain the bookcover in place," such corner-pocket not, however, being of such depth as to hinder the removal of the cover or board when the separable end flap 4 is turned back, said pocket or closed corner preventing the protruding of the corner of the book board or cover and also preventing gaping of the protector at the corner.

The flap 4: is secured at its free cornerto the back 1 of the protector by any suitable separable fastening device, and I find that a shallow ball-and-socket fastener 8 is well adapted for this purpose.

In order that the edge of the book board or cover at the open end of the protector having the free flap a may not be exposed, I preferably secure to the back section 1, beneath said free flap 4, a narrow auxiliary strip or flap 7 by stitching it to the said section 1, so that when the book-cover is in place its end edge will lie beneath said auxiliary strip or flap 7 and be concealed and protected. I preferably place one member of the separable fastener 8 on said auxiliary strip 7, at the inner end thereof, as shown, sinceI find this a convenient arrangement, as it avoids cutting f the outer section 1 and places the separable" fastener in concealed position, so as not to detract from the outward appearance of the protector. This is not essential, however, as the fastener may be secured, if desired, directly 'to the back-section 1, as shown in Fig. 1.

The protector is applied to a book by slipping one of the boards or covers of the book into the closed pocket 2 and then laying the other cover into the separable pocket 3, with the end edge of the cover beneath the auxiliary strip 7, the free flap 4: being turned back for this purpose. The flap .1: is then secured in position by the fastener 8 and the protector is in place.

In Fig. 3 I have shown a form of protector in which the pocket 0 is free at both ends, each inner corner being provided with sepaable fasteners 10, so that the whole flap 11 of the pocket may be turned back, auxiliary edge-protecting flaps 12 being provided at each end, this form of protector being found convenient for use in connection with certain kinds of booksas, for example, with books having'heavy stuffed covers.

It may be found desirable to use either form of separable flaps on both pockets of the protector, and I have indicated, by dotted lines in Fig. 3, fasteners on the inner corners of both pockets, and as this is a mere duplication of parts I consider such arrangement to be within the scope of my invention. Furthermore, it will be clear that the pocketsections as well as the auxiliary strip or edgeprotecting flap may be formed integral with the back section and then folded inwardly to position and secured in place instead of form ing them seperately, as shown. In fact, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the details of construction shown and described, as I have merely set forth one method of carrying my invention into effect and do not consider my invention restricted except in so far as it is restricted by the terms of the claims appended hereunto.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. A cover-protector for books comprising a back section having a cover-receiving pocket at one end permanently closed at its back and ends; a cover-receiving pocket at the other end of said back section formed of a single piece permanently secured to said back section at its back and one end and free along its other end so as to form a flap portion; and means for separably securing said flap portion to said back section at its inner corner.

2. A covern'otector for books comprising a back section having a cover-receiving pocket atone end permanently closed at its back and ends; a cover-receiving pocket at the other end of said back section formed of a single piece permanently secured to said back section at its back and one end and free along its other end so as to form a flap portion; and means for separably securing said flap portion to said back section at its inner corner; said free flap portion being secured along a portion of its length to form a closed corner.

2). A coverprotcctor for books comprising a back section having a cover-receiving pocket at one end permanentlyclosed at its back and ends; a cover-receiving pocket at the other end of said back section permanently closed at its back and one end and partially closed at its other end to form a closed corner, but being free throughout the greater part of its length to form a flap portion; means for separably securing the free flap portion of said pocket to said back section; and an auxiliary protecting-flap at the partially-closed end of said pocket beneath said free flap portion.

4. A cover-protectorforbooks comprising a back section; an inner flap portion formed of a single piece secured to said back section, said flap portion being free along its end edge and front and forming, with said back section, a pocket to receive the book cover or board means for separably securing said free portion of said flap to the said back section at its inner corner; and an auxiliary, inwardly-turned, protecting-flap for the edge of the book-board secured at the open end of said pocket beneath said inner flap portion.

5. A cover-protector for books comprising a back section 1; a pocket-section 2 formed of a single piece permanently secured at its back and its ends to said back section 1; a second pocket-section 3 formed of a single piece permanently secured at its back and one end to the other end of said back section 1; but being open at its other end so as to provide the free flap portion at; an auxiliary edge-protecting strip or flap 7 at the open end of the pocket beneath said free flap portion at; and a separable fastening S to secure said free flap portion 4 at its inner corner.

6. A cover-protector for books comprising a back section 1; a pocket-section 2 permanently secured at its back and ends to said back section 1; a second pocket-section 3 formed of asingle piece permanently secured at its back and one end to said back section 1 and partially secured thereto at its other end, as at 5, to form a closed corner, but being open throughout the greater portion of its length to form a free flap portion at; an auxiliar Y protecting-flap 7 at the open end of the pocket beneath the said free flap portion a; and a separable fastener S to secure the said flap portion 4. at its inner corner.

' 7. A coverprotector for books having a back section provided with a cover-receiving pocket, said pocket having a permanentlyclosed back and a partially-closed end to form a closed corner, but being open throughout the greater part of its end to provide a free flap portion, and means for separably securing the free flap portion of said pocket to said back section at its inner corner.

8. A cover-protector for books having a back section provided with a cover-rcceivin g pocket, said pocket having a permanentlyclosed back and a partially-closed end, to form a closed corner, but being open throughout the greater part of its end to provide a free flap portion; means for separably securing the free flap portion to said back section; and an auxiliary protecting flap or strip at the open end of said pocket beneath the free flap portion.

with a cover-receiving pocket having an inner flap portion formed of a single piece, said pocket being open at its front and one end but permanently secured along its back and opposite end; and an auxiliary, inwardly-turned, protecting-flap lying between the sides of the pocket.
