BOTTLE SEALING DEVICE.

PATENT OFFICE.
BOTTLE-SEALING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 732,481, dated June 30, 1903.
Application filed February 28, 1902. Serial No. 96,090. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM G. WIEDER- SEIM, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bottle-Sealing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a novel bottle-sealing device; and it consists of a cap secured to the bottle and a compressible gasket situated between the said cap and the inner wall of the neck of the bottle.
, It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 represent sectional views of a bottle-sealing device embodying my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the neck and mouth of a bottle which is provided with an exterior shoulder B.
O designates a sealing-cap having a flange D, which is adapted to engage with said shoulder B by being bent or otherwise caused to contact therewith, whereby the cap is firmly held in position, a suitable portion E of said flange projecting somewhat, affording a surface to be engaged by a suitable device for removing the cap.
F designates a shoulder on the cap which may be formed by the proper bending of the cap, which shoulder is adapted to enter the mouth or neck of the said bottle and forms a seat or support for a compressible gasket'G, which when the cap 0 is in position is seated between the said shoulder F and the inner wall of the mouth or neck of the bottle at the outer end thereof, it being seen that the said gasket will be forced by the compression between the mouth of said bottle and the sealingcap and will thus fill any inequalities therein which occur in bottles no matter how carefully made, and the gasket will thus form a tight joint or seal and at the same time act as a cushion for said cap at this point, the objection of which is evident. It will be seen that in this manner I form a holder or support for the gasket, and I may in some instances formthe shoulder inclined, as at H,
whereby the cap is adapted to fit bottles with various-sized months, as will be evident, and I may also form a protector for the gasket by bending the cap to form an edge J or secure a plate K of suitable material thereto, whereby the material forming the gasket may be used without danger of injuring the contents of the bottle.
It will be seen that the flange D'of the cap may fit the wall of the lip of the bottle or not, as desired, but that in either instance I have provided a complete seal for the bottle, which is effective in practice, economical in construction, and one that can be easily and quickly applied and removed, the removal of the cap being eifected by engaging the projection E with a suitable implement, it being evident that the said projection being either at the lower edge of the flange or at a point therein between the top and the lower edge or projecting inwardly at the shoulder F.
It will be apparent that slight changes may be made by those skilled in the art which will come within the scope of my invention, and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction I have herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a bottle and a sealing-cap having means for securing the same to the bottle, ofa compressible gasket situated within the mouth of the bottle and adapt-. ed to be compressed between the cap and the said mouth whereby any inequalities in the said mouth will be filled and a tight joint result.
2. The combination with a bottle and a sealing-cap having a portion thereof adapted to enter the mouth of the bottle and having means for securing the same to the bottle, of a gasket suitably held in said cap and pressed to flow around or into any inequalities in the mouth of the bottle.
3. The combination with a bottle having an exterior shoulder, of a sealing-cap,'having a portion thereof adapted to enter the mouth of the bottle, a compressible gasket between said portion and the inner wall of the said mouth, a flange on said cap adapted to entoo gage with said shoulder, and a projecting porexterior shoulder, of a sealing-cap, having a tion on said flange to afiord a surface to be flange which engages with said shoulder, a engaged for removing said cap. compressible gasket which is situated be- 15 4. The combination with abottle having an tween the said cap and the inner wall of the 5 exterior shoulder, of a sealing-cap, having a neck of the bottle, and a protector below said flange which is bent into contact with said gasket whereby the same is prevented from shoulder, a shoulder on said cap adapted to comingin contact with the contents of the said enter the neck of the bottle and the walls of bottle.
which are inclined, and a compressible gas- WILLIAM G. WIEDERSEIM. 1o ket situated between the shoulder of the cap Witnesses:
and the inner wall of the neck of the bottle. JOHN A. WIEDERSHEIM,
5. The combination with a bottle having an I O. D. MCVAY.
