Be it known that we, JOHN J. MCOORMICK and LEROY H. MODANIEL, citizens of the United States,-residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Amusement Devices, of which' the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of this invention is to provide an improved amusement apparatus or device of the class known as merry-go-round, carousels, and 4 'roundabouts, a further object being to provide an apparatus ordevice of the class which is particularly designed for the amusement of children and which may be used as a toy or which also may be used in the manner of other apparatus or device of this class for the amusement of older and grown persons.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of our improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the upper portion of our improved amusement apparatus or devce, the bottom portion thereof being shown in dotted lines; and Fig. 2 a side View looking in the direction of the arrow 06 of Fig. 1.

In the drawings forming part of this specification we have shown at a a part of the floor of a building or other structure, or this may be a part of an eleVated-platform, and at b is shown a support of any kind, such as the ground or the bottom portion of an elevated platform, and in practice we mount or place between the parts a and b a frame c, comprising a bottom portion 0 and a top portion 0 and the top and bottom portions of this frame are connected by posts or uprights c' or in any desired manner.

ates in connection with the gear-wheel d and by means of which the shafts d and e are turned in opposite directions, and said shaft f is provided with a crank 7, by which it may be turned, but said shaft may be turned by any suitable means or power device.

When the shafts d and e are turrechthe arms 2' and j will also be turned in opposite directions, and if the shaft f be turned to the right the movement of the arms i and j would be in the direction of the arrows y and z, respectively, as shown in Fig. 1. In this operation v the branch arm 7' first passes over the branch arm 2' and then over the branch arm 1 at which time the arms will again be parallel, and as they continue to revolve the branch arm 2 passes over the branch arm 7 and then over the branch arm 7' at which time they are again parallel. If the shaft f be turned to the left, the branch arn i will first pass over the branch arm j and then over the branch arm fiat which time said arms will be parallel, and as this movement of the arms continues the branch arm j will pass over the arm 71 and then over the arm 2 at which time the arms willbe again parallel. It will be understood that the speed of the motion of said arms will depend enluu tirely on the rapidity with which shafts d and e are turned, and in the form of construction shown the movement of the arms i andj must always be in opposite direction. It will also be apparent that the shafts d and e may be geared together in such a manner as to cause the arms and j both to turn in the same direction, and our invention is not limited to the method of gearing the shafts d and e in connection, and other changes in and modifications of the Construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of our invention or sacrificing its advantages.

This apparatus or device may be made of such strength and dimensions as to be used by grown people or children, and it will be understood that a suitable raised supplemental platform may be placed on the floor or platform member a, so as to enable parties to enter the boxes, cars, or carriages 70, and this supplemental raised platform may be angular in form or segmental in form, in which lastnamed event one or more thereof might be employed, and it will also be apparent that the branch arms e j '5 and j may be made of any desired length.

The device may also be made for use simply as a toy for the amusement of children, and 'our invention is not limited to the application thereof or the use to which the dcvice or apparatus is devoted.

Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An apparatus of the class described comprising two vcrtieally-arranged shafts which are geared in connection, a floor or platform member through which said shafts pass, and double arms secured to the upper ends of said shafts and provided with radial and upwardlydirected branches or members, substantially as shown and described.

2. An apparatus of the class described comprising two vertically-arranged shafts which are geared in connection, a floor or platform member through which said shafts pass, and double arms secure'd to the upper ends of said shafts and provided with radial and upwardlydirected branches or members, said branches or nembers being provided at their outer ends with cars, substantially as shown and (lescribed.

3. An apparatus of the class described comprising a suitable frame or support, two vertically-arranged shafts mounted therein and geared in connection and arms connected with the upper ends of each of said shafts and provided with oppositely and outwardly and upwardly inclined members having cars or earriages at their outer ends, substantially as shown and described.

4:. In an 'apparatus of the class described, a frame, two vertically-arranged shafts mounted therein and adapted to turn in opposite directions, and double arms Secured to the upper ends of said shafts and provided with oppositely-directed and upwardly-inclined members, substantially as shown and described.
