PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY DEL JACOBSON AND JOHN FREDERICK TREDE, OF ATLANTIC, IOWA.
PACKAGE-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 732,081, dated J' une 30, 1903.
Awww/[Eeuwen nea December 20,1902. serian... 136,032. (Nomad.)
To a/ZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY DELJAGOB- soN and J oHN FREDERICK TREDE, citizens of the United States, residing at Atlantic, in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package- Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a package-tie for use in connection with a cord which is permanently attached to one end of the tie device.
The device is a metal strip havinga shank with a straight portion, one end of the strip having means for holding a cord and the other end extending first backward and then forward to provide a cord-deector and clip. This construction enables a cord secured to one end of the tie device to be passed once around the package or bundle and back to the device, and thence around the package at right angles to the former direction, the free end of the cord being then forced into and held by the clip.
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a package secured by a cord and one form of the tie device. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a package secured by a cord and a modified form of the tie device; and Figs. 3 and 4E are plan views of the tie devices shown in Figs. l and 2, respectively. p
The device shown in Figs. l and 3 consists of a wire having a straight shank 1 and an eye 2 at one end of the shank. The wire at the other end of the shank is bent first backward toward the eye and thence forward away from the eye, thus providinga cord-deflector 3 and a spring-clip 4, which is preferably V-shaped. Both the deiector and the clip are substantially parallel to the shank. In use a cord 5 is fastened to the eye 2 and the tie device is placed fiat upon the upper surface of the package to be secured. The cord is passed once around the package and returned into the deflector 3. It is there bent at right angles and again passed around the package and the free end is passed over the shank and under the return-bend, and is then drawn securely into the spring-clip 4..
The tie device shown in Figs. 2 and 4 is precisely similar to that of Fig. 3, except that the straight shank l is bent at right angles at about its middle portion 6. In using this modified form the tie device is placed flat upon the package and the cord 5 is passed once around the package and returned to the bent portion 6. 4 It is there bent at right angles and again passed around the package, and thence through the deflector 3 and again around the package, and the free end is secured in the spring-clip 4.
The tie device is preferably bent out of round or iattened spring-steel wire, but may also be stamped out of sheet metal.
We claim- Y 1. A cord-fastener, consisting of a metal strip having a shank with a straight portion, one end of the strip having means for holding a cord and the other end extending first backward and then forward, to provide a cord-deiiector and clip, as set forth.
2. A cord-fastener, consisting of a resilient metal strip having a shank with a straight portion, one end of the strip having means for holding a cord and the other end being bent first backward and then forward, to provide a cord-defiector and spring-clip, as set forth.
3. A cord-fastener, consisting of a metal strip having a shank with a straight portion, one end of the strip having means for holding a cord and the other end extending first lbackward and then forward, to provide a cordldeector and clip, the shank, deflector and clip lying substantially in the same plane, as set forth. Y
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
