EUGENE R. PLUMMER, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
ALCOHOL-HEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 731,069, dated June 16, 1903.
Application filed September 3, 1902'. Serial No. 122.013. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom, t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, EUGENE R. PLUMMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Alcohol-Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to portable heating devices used to quickly heat a small amount of water or other liquid with alcohol or other like combustible fluid; and the objects thereof are to provide a heater of simple construction with few-parts that can be readily put into operation, that will heat the contents rapidly and with very little expense, and which can be packed compactly for transportation. I accomplish these objects by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 shows my improved heater, the left one-half in elevation and right one-half in vertical section, the lamp being shown in dotted lines in the boiler in the position it is in when the heater is packed ready for transportation. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the lamp. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the boiler, the cover and handle being in their open position and partly broken away.
In the drawings, A is the alcohol or other liquid holding lamp provided with a central draft-tube B, the upper portion of which is perforated and extends above the liquid-reservoir D, which is filled with some non-combustible porous material'E, asbestos being preferred, which is held in the receptacle by a wire screen F. The liquid-reservoir is provided with hinged covers G to cover the liquid when the lamp is not burning. The covers may be turned so as to entirely cover or uncover the top of the reservoir. The inner edge of the cover fits into an annular groove H to make a tight joint. The outer casing of the reservoir extends below the bottom of the liquid-holding space thereof and forms a projecting flange or base I for the lamp, which is provided with a plurality of portsJfor the passage of the air into the draft-tube. These ports are controlled by al damper K, having ports K', which register with'the ports of the base when the damper is open. This damper is provided with a handle or knob L,
lamp is removed from the boiler.
which projects through the ports in the base and keeps the damper from separating from the base, by means of which the damper is operated to open or close the ports of the base Io regulate the amount of air admitted to the draft-tube.
The lamp is provided with handles M, preferably of wire, hinged thereto, which are of such shape that they may be turned to lie close against the sides of the reservoir when desired, the closed position being shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The boiler N, which is designed to hold the liquid to be heated, has a base N', which is adapted tofit into the top of the draft-tube and to be held thereby in an upright position, as shown in Fig. l. It is provided With a hinged handle O, which may be closed inte the boiler, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l.
The boiler also has a hinged lid P and a The boiler above the base, which is prefer-Y I ably circular, is preferably in shape a truncated cone, and the lamp is preferably of a similar shape,.except the .draft-tube, whichl is preferably'circular. Other shapes may be used without departing from the spirit of my invention, which is embodied in a boiler Whose sides are outwardly toward the top, adapted to be held centrally by a lamp having an opening surrounding the bottom of the boiler, so that-the flame will impinge the sides of the boiler.
The central draft-tube may be omitted, if desired, suitable provisions being made to hold the boiler; but I prefer its use, as it provides better combustion for the fuel.
I have shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 the lamp placed in the boiler, which is the position it occupies when it is desired to transport the heater to any considerable distance, as when traveling.
l/Vhen it is desired to use the heater, the
The reservoir is filled with liquid fuel, and the boiler, with the liquid to` be heated in it, is placed on the lamp, which is then lighted. The flame instantly surrounds the sides of the boiler, and as it is in shape a truncated cone it presents a -large surface to the flame, thereby IOO enabling the heating of its contents much quicker than if applied to the bottom, as is usual with alcohol-heaters.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*- 1. A heater comprising a main liquid-holding vessel; in shape an inverted truncated cone; a base to support said vessel the said base adapted to hold liquid fuel and when not in use to drop into the main vessel; a handle pivoted to the top of said vessel and adapted to be thrown over and into the Vessel so that the top can be closed while the base and liandle are inside the vessel; a lid pivoted to said vessel, as shown. f
2. The herein -deseribed alcoholheater, comprising the truncated-cone-shapedboiler; the alcohol-lamp, of such a shape to iii; into the boiler; a liquid fuel reservoir in said lamp; a draft-tube centrally disposed within said reservoir, the top of which extends above the reservoir, said tube above the reservoir,
, hereunto subscribed my name this 17th day of July, 1901.
I EUGENE R. PLUMMER.
