UNITED STAT S I Patented June 16, 1903.

ATENT SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 7 30,872, dated June 16, 1903.
Application filed June 13,1902. Serial No. 111,528. (,No model.)
applied to any ordinary spring bed-bottom having a wooden frame.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which--- Figure 1 is a plan view of a bed-bottom. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail elevation with parts broken away. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, in which similar reference-letters indicate the same or like parts, A indicates the wooden frame of an ordinaryspring bed-bottom, and B the Woven-wire spring, secured to the 0pposite ends thereof in the ordinary or any desired manner.
The tightening devices comprise each three main parts 0, D, and E, respectively. The first of these parts 0 consists simply of a metal plate having suitable holes for the passage of screws 0, by which it may be secured to the inner face of the side bar A of the frame A. It carriesa rib 0, preferably of dovetailed shape, on which the second member or part D is slidably mounted by having a dovetailed groove with which said rib engages. The lug O is provided at the rear end of the plate 0, through which passes a setscrew that bears against a similar lug formed on the rear end of the member or part D and by which thelatter may be moved longitudinally with relation to the plate 0. The memberD has an offset portion D at its forward end, to which the rear end of the part or member E is pivotally connected by a suitable bolt d. This forward member E is secured to the inner face of the side bar near its head and carries atits rear end a rigidly-attached or integral ratchetwheel E, which rests in the rabbeted portion at the forward end of the member D. It will be understood that the side bars A are cut before described is provided, and the parts are normally held against pivotal movement by a dog (1*, pivoted in a recess inthe member D and engaging the teeth of the ratchetwheel. When it is desired to tighten the spring, the dogs on both sides of the bed-bottom are-raised by the set-screws d, which bear on the rear ends of the dogs, and this allows the head portion of the bed-bottom to swing upwardly, loosening the spring. After the parts D have been moved sufficiently the head portion is swung into horizontal position and the dogs engaging the ratchet-wheels hold them in their normal position and against turning under the action of the spring.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A spring bed-bottom comprising aframe having divided side bars, a sliding member carried by each side bar on one side of the division with .means for adjusting the same, a second member secured to eachside bar on the opposite side of the division, a pivotal connection between said members, and pawland-ratchet mechanism for controlling the movement of said parts and a woven wire spring carried bysaid frame.
2. In combination, the frame including the divided side bars, the woven-wire spring extending between the ends of said frame, the bracket members secured to the side bars on one side of the division, sliding members carried by said bracket members, set-screws for adjusting said sliding members, pivoting members carried by the side bars on the opposite side of the division and pivotallyconnected to the sliding members,ratchet-wheels carried by said pivotal members, and dogs carried by the sliding members and engaging said ratchet-wheels.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS J. CANIVAN.
