Description

I PATENTED JAN 71868 i /Mi. A

WILLIAM. H. DAMRON, ROBERT H. MASSEY. AND LORENZO F. WHITMAN. OF MAGOMB, "ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 73,081, dated January 7, 1868-.
IMPROVEMENT-IN UULT IVATOR AND PLOUGH.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAYCONOERN:
Be it known that-we, WILLIAM H. DAMRON, Rorsnr H. MASSEY, and Lorenzo F.-WH ITMAN, of Macomh, in the countyof McDonough, and State of Illinois, haveiuvented a new and improved Cultivator andP-loughj and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of th'e some, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the lettersof reference marked thereon.
This invention consists chiefly of devices for render ing tho beams and supporting-wheels of a cultivatingmachine adjustable laterally, in s uch manner as tooonvert the apparatus into a gang or subsoil 'pl'ough, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
To enable others to make and use our inventionpwe'will now proceed to describe its construction and operation. 7 I v A represents the framework of the m'achine,'o'f ordinary construction, supported by means of the wheels a a connected with the cross-bar a, and the caster-wheels b 6 secured to the front endsof the 'pl'ough beams o a. The said plough-beams run longitudinally-of 'the frame-A, and to them are pivoted the plough-shanks e, which are susceptible of elevation and depression, inthe usual manner, by means of theieverdand rack '02. The wheels in a revolve on axles projecting from the lower ends of wrists e e, Figure 3, which are connected with the crossbar a by means of sliding chases e, in such manner that the said wheels are laterally adjustable onthe crossbar a", andmay be fixed at any desired points thereon-by means ofset-screws It 7 operating in connection with one of each pair of the'chases e. The purpose of making the wheels thus adjostable is that they may both be set on-the same side of one of-the -plough-bea'ms, the other plough-beam being removed, and the cultivator thus turned into a gang-plough, in the operation of which the wheels will run on the unbroken ound. The. rear ends of the plough-beams cc are'sus'tained in the crotches f 2', which are also adjustable on the cross-bar a, in like manner. as the chases e. Said crotches are pierced with horizontal holes 1", in the direction of the length of the cross-b ar ai, by'means of which-holes and the pins 71%, the rear ends of the ploughbcams may be set at various heights. The front ends of the ploiigh-beains c c are also embraced .by crotches Z Z, the shanks Z Z of which pass vertically i pward through corresponding orifices m, Figure 2, in the projecting flanges on of the guide 11., that reciprocates horizontally in the slot 11/ of the front cross-beam 0 of the frame A. The shanks Z4, may be shiftedin the orifices m', -as may he desired. The advantage of making the ploughbea-ms thus laterally adjustable is at least twofoldz first, the ploughs may be made to throw dirt to or from the plants by simply shifting the beams to the sides opposite those where they are represented in the drawings;
second, the beams may be set-without the side picces'oi' the frame, and thus made to throw dirt against trees 7 or other vegetable growths too high to be straddled by the machine. By making them vertically adjustable, if both ploughs are placed on one side, and near the rearlend of the beam, and the latter letdown in the crotchcs e e, a subsoil plough is obtained.
I It will be observed that the ploughs are made with cutting-edges 7' projectingsorne distance forward of their curved sidos. These edges are for the purpose of making'a smooth out, so that none of the soil shall, by
them, be thrown to either side to the injury of the plants. They also act asfenders t-o prcventclods from passing over the front edge of the plough upon'th e plants. The guide we is operated by the lever s,-pivoted toone of the cross-beams of the frame. 7
Having th s fully described our invention, what we claim as ncw,,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the wheel a with the wrist .e, sliding chases e, and cross-beama, as and for the purpose described. 7 H
2. The combination of the plough-beam c with the sliding crotches z', the cross-beam a, the guide at, and slotted cross-beanie, substantially asset forth. I
3. The combination of the plough-beam c withthe crotches z, provided with thohoies iand pins 70, as and for the purpose set forth. 7 v p WILLIAM H. DAMRON, I ROBERT H; MASSEY, Witnesses: LORENZO F. WHITMAN.
