Description

.w-. J. WILSON.
Wheel Cultivator.
No. I 24,171.
Patented May 24, 1859'.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
W. I. WILSON, OF FRANKLIN, INDIANA.
lM PROVEMENT IIN CULTIVATO RS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 24,171, dated May 24, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
BeitknownthatI,W.I.WILsON,ofFranklin, Johnson county, and State of Indiana, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawing, of which Figure 1 is a perspective view with one wheel removed from the carriage, A represents an axle, on which are secured two supporting-wheels, B.
H is the tongue, also secured to axle A.
I represents a cross-piece, which is secured a short distance from the axle on the tongue.
C 0 represent two levers, which are provided at their rear ends with arms D D, to the lower end of which arms are secured plows a a. The forward ends of levers O are provided with two arms, d d, which turn toward each other and are parallel with the cross-piece I.
E is an axle, secured under axle A, and to which the levers 0 C are attached, the ends of the axle passing through the leversa little back of their centers.
F F are guides, two on each end of crosspiece I. These guides extend down toward the ground, and receive the forward ends of the levers O 0 between them. When the carriage is set in motion the plows a a drag and enter the ground. The depth to which they enter is regulated by means ot'the foot of the driver, which presses upon the arms 61 01. By pressing upon the forward ends of the levers the plows may be entirely removed from the ground, which is often necessary in moving from one field to another, or when any firm obstruction stands in the way of the plows.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of axles A and E, wheels B, levers O U, shanks D D, plows a a, crosspiece I, guides F F, and arms at d, for operating conjoint-1y in the manner and for thepurpose herein set forth.
