PATENT OFFICE.
J OHANN HOFMANN, OF WEST-COVINGTON, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR TO ERNEST H. HUENEFELD, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 730,537, dated June 9, 1903.
Application filed October 20,1902. Serial No. 128,018. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LJOHANN Hornnnma citizen of the United States, residing at West Covington, in the county of Kenton and State of Kentucky; have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Movements, of which the following is a'specification.
My invention relates to anew and improved mechanical movement, and has for its object the conversion of continuous rotary motion into reciprocating motion in different directions in a plurality of driven objects, one of which may be also yieldingly mounted for permitting elevation and falling thereof; and the invention will be readily understood from the following description and claims and from the drawings, in which latter- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device with the outer hearing I) omitted and showing the swinging levers in one position in full lines and in assumed position in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of'the same with one of the swinging levers partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a plan view of my improved device.
Arepresents the supporting-bracket, which may be secured to any desired object.
B is a stud on the bracket, on which an approximately hell-crank-shaped swinginglever O is pivoted. The bell-crank swinging lever 0 consists, preferably, of the long sidewardlyextending arm 0 and the short downwardlyextending arm c'with the pivot between the extensions. The lever O has a slot D, in which a box E is adapted to slide. The crank-pin f of the crank-shaft F turns in the box.. The crank-shaft F is journaled in a bearing a of the bracket A and carries a suitable handle, wheel, pulley, or other operating device for turning the shaft, preferably continuously, in a given direction, thereby turning the crank-pin withit and causing the lever C to rock on its pivot. The lever O has a pintle G, which takes into a slot H of a lever I, pivoted at a to the bracket A. The construction is such that when the crankshaft is rotated continuously in a given di-- rection the outer ends of the swinging levers C and I are reciprocated or rocked simultaneously in different directions. An outer hearing 2) may also be provided for the stud B.
The outer end of the swinging lever O has a bearing o ,by means of which it may be connected to a movable object or connection therewith, as indicated at K. The outer end of the swinging lever'I is provided with a slot L, into which a pin M on a secondmovable v object, as indicated at N, may take for imparting motion to the latter. The slotL permits the driven object N to move toward and from the pivoted point of the lever I, while having the movements of the swinging lever I imparted to it irrespective of its changes in position stated. It will therefore be seen that by means of my improved device continuous rotary motion in a given direction is utilized for reciprocating or rocking two driven objects simultaneously in different directions, while permitting those two objects to relatively change their positions to each other.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a mechanical movement, the combination of a crank-shaft, a bearing therefor, asubstantially bell-crank-shaped swingable lever and a second swingable lover, a pivotal support foreach of the levers intermediate of their respective endsand rigid with relation to the first-named bearing, with the levers operatively connected for swinging movement of both, said crank-shaft operatively connected with said first-named lever between its pivotal support and oneof its ends form ing a lever of the third class at that end and a lover of the first class at its other end.
2. In a mechanical movement, the combination of a pair of swingable levers having pivotal supports rigid with relation to each other, with the lovers articulated between their pivotal supports, a pair of driven objects connectedjwith said levers beyond their respective pivotal supports, a crank-shaft having a crank-pin, and a sliding connection between the crank-pin and one of said levers located between the pivotal support of said lever and the driven object connected with said lever.
3. In a mechanical movement, the combination with a crank shaft and pin adapted to be continuously rotated in a given direction and two driven objects adapted to be simultaneously reciprocated thereby in different directions, of a pair of swingable levers, a pivotal support for each, a sliding connection between the levers, a sliding connection be tween the crank-pin and one of the levers, a sliding connection between a lever and an object to be moved, with a connection between the other lever and other of said objects to be moved.
In witness whereof I have signed my name hereto in the presence of two subscribing 25 witnesses.
, JOHANN HOFMANN. WVitnesses:
