OEL-BURNING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part k0f Letters Fatent No. 730,395, dated J une 9, 1903. Application iiled October 25,1902; Serial No. 128,764. (No model.)
To all whom t mag/concern,.-
Be it known that I, BERT K. PICKERILL, a citizen of the United States'or` America, residing in Kansas City, in the county of Wyandotte and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oil-Burning Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accom panying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to improvements in oil-burning devices.
The object of my invention is to provide a device capable of absorbing fuel-oil that may be rst immersed in the said oil and then placed in a stove or other suitable receptacle vand there ignited, the lflame resulting from the burning oil being utilized for the purpose of cooking or heating.
' A further object of my invention is to provide a novel mechanism by means of which the oil maybe absorbed and the absorbent body carried to and from the place where it is to be used without danger of spilling oil during the passage.
t My invention provides, further, a casing adapted to contain the oil in which the ab; sorbent body is immersed preparatory to itsV use in the stove, a covering for the casing, and releasable means'for securing the cover to the absorbent body.
Other novel features of construction are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
1 indicates the absorbent body, preferably of absorbent material, such as clay tiling, sandstone, Sac. The bodyV 1 is preferably cylindrical in its general shape and4 is provided at its ends with legs 2, extending downwardly from its lower side. It is provided also with a series of upwardly-extending holes 3 for conveying air through the body from the under side thereof. A casing 4, of any desirable shape and shown as rectangular in the drawings, is adapted to contain oil in which the absorbent body 1 is immersed prior to the body being used. The open top of the casing 4 is provided with a detachable cover 5, preferably having-flanges on its sides Y for embracing the upper end of the casing. A handle 6 is provided on the top of the cover to which it is secured. The said handle is preferably of an inverted-U shape, the horizontal portion of which is provided with two downwardlyextending ears 7 and a slot8 'between the two ears'to receive therein a catch 9, pivoted between the two ears 7 by any desirable means.
The body 1 has inserted in the central hole 3 a supporting device 10, comprising a bent wire, the lower ends of which at 11 are bent outwardly to prevent the extraction of the device. The upper end of the device 10 is formed into an eye 12, adapted to be inserted through a slot 13 in the cover and be releasably engaged by the catch 9 when so inserted. In operating my invention the body 1 is placed in the casing 4., which has previously been supplied with a fuel-oil, such as coaloil. The cover 5 is then placed on the casing, with the hook or catch 9 engaging the eye 12. When it is desired to use the body 1, the cover is lifted from the casing 4, and the catch 9, being engaged with the eye 12, will cause the body 1 to be raised also. The cover 5 is then inverted, so as to place the body 1 above the cover, whichwill in this position catch such few drops ofvoil as may drip from the surface of the body 1. The body 'is then inserted in the stove or place .of use,l after which the cover is detached therefrom by moving the catch 9 to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The body 1 'then has a lighted match applied tov it,'after which -it `will continue t0 burn fiercely for a considerable length of time. vVi'hen it is again desired'to immerse the body 1 in theoil in the casing, the cover is applied to the body and the support 10 slipped through the slot in the cover and engaged by the catch 9. The body, with the cover, may then be carried to the casing and the body placed in the oil, with cover in place on the casing ready for use and preventing access of extraneous matter into the casing 4.
Myinvention is one which can be operated with perfect safety and without danger of soiling the floor or carpet, and when the absorbent body is not in use it is securely protected from dirt.
My invention may be modiiied in many ways without departing from its spirit.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Leiters Patent, is-
1. In an oil-burning device, the combination with an absorbent body, of a casing therefor, a removable cover for the casing, and re leasable means for securing the absorbent body to the said cover, substantially as described.
2. In an oil-burning device, the combination With an absorbent body, of a casing therefor, a removable cover for the casing, a hook carried by the said cover, and a device mounted on the absorbent body and adapted to releasably engage the said hook, substantially as described.
3. The combination, in an oil-burning device, with an absorbent body, oil a casing therefor, a removable cover for the casing, and a releasable catch mechanism for securing the cover to the said absorbentbody, substantially as described.
4. In an oil-burning device, the combination with an absorbent body, of a casing therefor, a removable cover for the casing provided Withahandle, areleasable catch mounted on the said handle, and a device carried by the absorbent body and adapted to engage the said catch, substantially as described.
5. In an oil-burning device, the combination with an absorbent body provided with a supporting device, of a casing for the said body, a cover for the said casing provided With a handle and having a slot adapted to receive therethrough the said supporting device, and releasable means for securing the cover to the said supporting device, substantially as described. y
6. In an oil-burning device, the combination with an absorbent body provided with a supporting device, of a casing for the said. body, a cover for the said casing provided with a handle and a slot adapted to receive therethrough the said supporting device, and a pivoted catch carried by the cover and adapted to releasably engage the said supporting device, substantially as described.
'7. In an oil-burning device, the combination with an absorbent body provided with a supporting device, of a casing for the said body, a cover for the said casing, and a releasable catch pivotally mounted on the cover and adapted to engage the said supporting device, substantially as described.
8. In an oil-burning device, the combination with an absorbent body provided with a supporting device having an eye, of a casing for the said body, a cover for the said casing, and a movable catch carried by the cover and adapted to releasably engage the eye of the supporting device, substantially as described.
9. In an oil-burning device, the combination with an absorbent body provided with a supporting device, of a casing for the said body, a cover for the said casing provided with a handle and a slot adapted to receive therethrough the said supporting device, and a catch pivoted to the said handle and adapted to releasably engage the said supporting device when the same is inserted through the said slot, substantially as described.
10. In an oil-burning device, the combination with an absorbent body provided with a supporting device, of a casing for the said body, a cover for the said casing provided with a handle having two ears and a slot between the t-Wo ears, the cover having also a slot adapted to receive therethrough the said supporting device, and a catch pivoted between the said two Vears and located in the said slot in the handle and adapted to releasably engage the said supporting device v'vhen the same is inserted through the slot in the cover, substantially as described.
