Be it known that I, JOHN B. FLADBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rutland, in the county of SargentY and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Chimney Gleaners; and I do declare'the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention is an improved lamp-chimney cleaner; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved device of this character provided with an expansible head having spring members adapted to carry the paper, cloth, or other fabric usedfor cleaning the -chimney and to be adjustable to regulate the pressure of the fabric or paper against the interior of the chimney while cleaning the same.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a lampchimney cleaner 'embodying my improvements with parts in section. Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal sectional view of the same, showing the expansible head partly closed` Fig. 3 is a detail transverse sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line o, CL of Fig. l.

In the embodiment of my invention I provide a rod 1, which has a handle 2 at one end. At the opposite end is a head 3, comprising a plurality of radially-disposed spring-arms 4. The rod has near its handled end stop-notches 5 6 and is further provided ata suitable distance from its handled end with a stop-notch 7. A sleeve 8, which is cylindrical in form, is slidable longitudinally On the rod 1, is provided at the end nearest the head with an annular flange '9, is 'further provided at a snitable distance from the said liange with a flange 10, forming a stop, and is provided at its outer end with an arm 11, forming a iinger-pull. A spring-pressed dog 12 is pivotally connected to the outer end of the said sleeve S and is adapted to engage the stop-notches 5, 6, and '7. Said spring-pressed dog has an arm 13 adapted to be grasped by the finger of the operator in order to release the dog from one of the said stop-notches. In one side of the sleeve S is an elongated slot 14. A stud 15,

travels in the said slot.

y A collar 1G is slidable on that portion of the sleeve S between the iianges 9 l0. A spring 17, which is here shown as a coiled extensile spring, is on the said portion of the said sleeve. One end thereof bears against the stop-flange 10 and its free end bears against the collar 16. The function of the said spring, as will be understood, is to normally press the said collar on the said sleeve. Said collar is connected to the respective spring-arms 4 of the head 3 by link-rods 18, which are pivotally connected both to said collar and to said spring-arms.

The paper, cloth, or other fabric to he employed for cleanin g the inside of a lamp-chimney is placed on the spring-head Vwhile the latter is expanded, and the sleeve is then drawn outwardly on therod to draw the outer ends of the spring-arms of the head inwardly and cause the same to become engaged with the paper or fabric, and the sleeve is then appropriately locked to the rod by causing the dog io engage one of the stop-notches thereof. dThe expansible head thus covered by the paper or fabric is then inserted in the 'chimney and the expansible head varied any radial extent to accommodate it to the sizeof the chimney. When the sleeve is locked to the rod, the spring .17 and the collar 1G, which is slidable on the sleeve and connected to the spring-arms of the expansible head by the link-rods, enables the said spring-arms to accommodate themselves to the shape and size of the chimney as the implement is manipulated therein.

Fromtheforegoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and Operation of the invention will be. readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

' Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction maybe resorted to without departing from the principle or sacriiicing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A lamp-chimney cleaner comprising a rod, an expansible head having radially-disposed Which projects from the rod 1, enters and arms, a sleeve slidable 0n the rod, means to adjust said sleeve on and secure the same t0 said rod, an element slidable on the sleeve, connections between said element and the arms of the expansihle head, and a spring to normally expand said head, substantially as described.

2. In a lamp-Chimney cleaner, the combination of a rod, an expansible head having radially-disposed spring-arms, a sleeve slidable on said rod, means to adjust and secure said sleeve, an element slidable on said sleeve, and connections between said element and the spring-arms of the head, substantially as de scribed.
