To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known thatI, FRED W. TOBEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at'Oincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and'useful Improvements in Type-Writer Cabinets, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

My invention relates to that class of cabinets for type-writers which when closed form an ordinary desk and which by the opening of the lid thereof brings up into working polid is closed-and the type-writer platform lowered Within the cabinet the type-writer isc'ontained ina practically dust-proof compartment, and whereby in the raising and the lowering of the tpye-Writer platform itis always retained in a horizontal position.

The novelty of my invention will be "hereinafter more fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, Sheet 1, is a central sectional end elevation of a cabinet embodying my invention and show ing the lid closed and the inner casing indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2,'Sheet 1, is a corresponding View showing the lid entirely opened. Fig. 3, Sheet 2, isa corresponding view diminished'through the center of the cabinet, showing the type-writer table in about midway position between its extreme positions. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the cabinet closed and on the scale of Figs. land 2, the ends of the drawer-compartments being broken away. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail in elevation through one of the wells or compartments containing the'lever mechanism.

The same letters of reference are used to indicate identical parts in all the figures.

The cabinet, as seen in Fig. 4, is preferably in the form of a flat-top desk with drawer and cupboard compartments at each side, as seen at A, and the tops directly over these compartments at B are stationary and together with a permanent back wall 0 form aframework for the cabinet, which is contained between the inner side walls of the drawer and cupboard sections A.

Within the space between the drawer-compartments A is titted a compartment-case D, (shown bydotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2,) which has side walls E adjacent to the side walls of the drawer-compartments, with aspace between ihcm, as seen in Fig. 5, the back wall F, flat top wall G, Fig. 3, and an upwardly-curved top wall H, extending to the front of the cabinet, the whole forming ample space for the knees and feet oft-he operator, which is a great desideratum in cabinets of this character. In the space above this compartment D is hung the platform or shelf I, upon which the typewriter rests-and by which it is carried. The particular construction of this platform is immaterial, and in the present instance it is in the shape of a tray, with an inclined rearcompartment or compartments a for the reception of letter-heads, envelope, and other accessories used in connection with a typewriter. It is supported upon two leversJ K, pivoted to its under side, as at b 0, respectively, near its front and rear ends and at each'side, said levers being contained in the space d, Fig. 5, between the side walls E of the compartment D and the inner side walls of the'di'awer-Immpartments A. These levers are parallel a'nd have their lower ends pivoted in said space d, as at e f, Figs. 1, 2, and 3. The lower ends of the levers J below their pivots are curved rearwardly, as seen at g, and the ends of these curved extensions are pivoted, as at h, to links 71, whose upper ends are pivoted to the ends of lovers L, as atj, and whichllevers are pivoted, as at 70, in the space (1. The opposite ends of the levers L are pivoted to the lid of the cabinet, as at Z, near its rear edge, said lid when d rawn up and in its closed position being flush withthetopsBofthedrawercompartments and filling the space between the same to entirely close the cabinet. The said top is also pivoted to the side walls of the compartment bylevers N,the forward ends of said levers being pivoted, as at m, to the under side of the top near its front end and their rear ends, as at n, to the sides of the compartment. It results from this construction that when the lid is raised at its forward end and thrown back the levers J K elevate the platform I and bring the type-writer up into operating position, the levers J K standing perpendicular, as seen in Fig. 2, and when the lid is drawn up and closed, as seen in Fig. 1, the platform is lowered and assumes the position in the closed compartment at the rear of the desk. The arrangement of the levers is such and their pivotal connections are such that when the platform is about midway ofits travel or in the position shown in Fig. 3 the parts are about evenly balanced with the type-writer on its platform, and from that position the further raising of the platform is rendered automatic by the preponderance of weight of the lid, and the further lowering of the platform is likewise rendered automatic by the preponderance of the weight of the platform and the type-writer. I thus produce a leverage mechanism which is as nearly balanced as possible, rendering the opening or closing of the lid and the consequent raising and lowering of the platform a very easy matter, while the platform and type-writer constantly maintain a horizontal position.

Another important feature of my invention is the complete inclosing of the leverage mechanism, so thatit cannot possibly become entangled with the garments of the operator in the raising and lowering of the lid and type-writer.

Having thus fully described my invention, 1 claim 1. In a type-writer cabinet, the combination of a movable lid, a platform for the type-writer, a compartment for said platform opened and closed by said movable lid, parallel levers pivoted at their upper ends to said platform and at their lower ends to the sides of the compartment, said levers being arranged to stand vertically when the platform is raised to its upper forward position and to be inclined rearwardly when said platform islowered to the rear part of the cabinet, side levers pivoted at their upper ends to the under side of the lid near its forward end and at their lower ends to the side walls of the compartment, additional side levers pivoted at their upper ends to the under side of the lid near its rear end and at their lower ends to the side walls of the compartments,

extensions of said last-named levers below their lower pivots, and extensions of the forward platform-levers below their lower pivots, and pivoted links connecting said extensions of the last-named levers, whereby the opening and closing of the lid raises and lowers the platform in a constantly horizontal position and whereby in its mid-travel said platform and lid substantially balance each other.

2. In a type-writer cabinet, and in combination, a swinging lid adapted to form a deskoover to the cabinet, and to be swung back and down into the same, a platform for the type-writer beneath said swinging lid, a kneespace beneath said type-writer platform, side walls for said knee-space separated from the walls of the cabinet to form vertical openings, parallel levers pivoted at their upper ends to said platform and at their lower ends within the opening between the side walls of the knee-space and the side walls of the cabinet, side levers pivoted at their upper ends to the under side of the lid near its forward end and at their lower ends within the opening between the side walls of the knee-space and the Walls of the cabinet, additional side levers pivoted at their upper ends to the under side of the lid near its rear end and at their lower ends within the opening between the side walls of the knee-space and the side walls of the cabinets, extensions of said last-named levers below their lower pivots, extensions of the forward platform-levers below their lower pivots, and pivoted links connecting said extensions of the last-named levers, whereby all of the lever mechanism below the knee-space is contained within the opening between the side walls of the knee-space and the side walls of the type-writer compartment, and is prevented from coming in contact with the garments of the operator, substantially as described.
