`UNTTEE STATES Patented June 2, 1903. l
PATENT OFFICE.
RAIL-JOINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 729,946, dated June 2, 1903.
Application iiled December 29, 1902. Serial No. 137.078. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, LOEENTZ LEHoTzKY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail- Joints, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in rail-joints, the'primary object of the invention being to provide a bolt for holding fish-plates to the webs of the rails, whereby to join two rails together without employing nuts, which are liable to become loosened from their bolts.
To this end the invention resides 'in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims. Y
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciflcatiomand wherein like numerals of reference indicatelike parts throughout the several views,in Which- Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of the abutting ends of rails joined together in accordance with my invention, one of the lishplates being partly broken away to show the form of aperture or opening in the-web of the rail. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detached detail plan view of the locking-washer. of a part of the rail, showing one of the bolts in -cross-section. part of the rail, showing the bolt in position before the lockinglugs are turned down. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a part of the rail, showing the locking-lugs turned down, so as to prevent withdrawal of the bolt.
To put my inventionv into practice, I provide the rails l with openings 2 in the web and at each side ofthe openings provide slots 3, registering with the openings. The opening 2 is adapted to receive the shank 4 of the bolt, and the slots 3 are provided to permit the projecting sides or wings of the plate 5, formed integral with or rigidly secured to the one end of the bolt, the other end of the bolt being provided with suitable head 6. The
iish-plates 7 are provided with openings -8 and Fig. 4 is a side elevation Fig. 5 is a side `elevation of a;
with sideslots 9, communicating witlsaid openings, the openings 8 fitting the shank of the bolt and the side slots 9 permitting the locking-plate 5 to pass through beyond the face of the fish-plates. After the bolts have been passed through the two iish-plates and webs of the rails they are held by means of the locking-washer 10, provided with a central opening ll and side slots 12. The material cut away from these side slots is turned up to form lugs 14, extending at right angles to the face ofthe washer, and after the washer has been placed over the plate 5 it is turned on the shank -l of the bolt and the lockinglugs 14 are then pressed down flush with the face of the Washer, so as to prevent the withdrawal of the bolt, even if the plate 5 is turned so as to be in line with the openings in the washer in the fish-plate and rail.
To remove the bolts, the lugs 14 may be turned up, atwhich time the bolt can be readily withdrawn.
It will be noted that various changes may be made inthe details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a railjoint, the com bination with abutting rails having webs provided with boltopenings, the Webs of said rails being provided with long-itu'dinally-arrangedslots, and fish plates, of bolts provided with transversely-.arranged locking-plates at one end, and heads at their opposite ends., andlocking-Washers provided with central bolt-openings and longitudinal slots communicating with and extending frolneach side of the said openings, the said washers-havingintegral lugs formed at the sides of the last-named slots, the said lugs adapted to be bent downl iiush with the said washers, substantially as described.
2. In a rail-joint, the combination with abutting rails having webs provided with boltopenings, the said webs provided with longitudinal slots communicating with and extend- IOO ing from each side of the said openings, the
said slots extending through the said webs, and fish-plates provided with bolt-openings and slots adapted to register with those of the said Webs, of bolts provided with transflush with the said Washers, substantially as xo Versely-arranged looking-plates at one end, described.
and heads on their opposite ends, and lock- In testimony whereof I aix my signature ing-Washers provided with central loolt-opeuin the presence of two Witnesses.
ings and longitudinal slots communicating f f f with and extending from each side of the said I LOREN FA LEHOTKY' openings, the said Washers having integral Witnesses: lugs formed at the sides of the lest-named A. M. WILSON, slots, the said lugs adapted to be bent down E. E. POTTER.
