Be it known that I, LOUISA HEILMANN-TAY-' LoR, a married woman, a citizen of the French Republic, residinglat Paris, in the department of the Seine, France,have inventeda Machine for the Production of Coated Alimen-' tary Products, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to a-machine destined for the mechanical manufacture of all alimentary products formed of a co mest-ible envelop inclosin g any other comestible material.such' as cakes, chocolate, liquors, ,foods, and the like-which will be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings,

The two materials servingto constitute the envelop and the lHtOIlOIyIOSPGGtlVGlY, of the alimentary product are reduced to the form of paste and are separately filled into the cylinders 1 and 2 of two presses. The [upper I ends of the cylinders are closed by a movable breech 3, furnished with the ajutages 4, which are changed for different profiles required in the product. The presses may either be vertical, as shown by the drawings, or horizontal. The cylinder l'incloses the material destined to form the envelop of the product, while the cylinder 2 will contain'the material to be inclosed by theenvelop. The pistons 5 and 6 have imparted to them without rotation around their axes a step-by-step linear motion proportionalin each case to the volume of the material for the envelop or for .its contents to be expelled for each product. They are fixed upon rods 7 and 8, on the lower parts of which screw-threads are cut to fit the screwnnts 9 and 10, carried in the bolsters 11 and 12. The rotation of. the screw-nuts consequently gives the linear motion required in the pistons, which must not turn. The screw- Serial No. 119,037. (No model.)
nuts have extension-sleeves, upon which'are fixed the ratchet- wheels 13 and 14, rotated I stepby step by means of pawls 15 and 16. These pawls are pinned upon arms connected withcollars l7 and 18, so that they are compolled. to move in arcs concentric with the Wheels, and motion is communicated to them through the connecting-rods 19 and 2Q. These connecting-rods have their other ends bored and fitted upon the studs 21 and 22, which are adjustable in grooves 23 and 24, formed in the rotary plates 25 and 26. Both of these platesare fixed on the shaft 27, carried in the bearing 28. The lower plate 26 has bevelteeth on its under edge and is driven by the bevel-pinion 30, gearing with these teeth, as shown by Figs. 1 and 4.
The object of the adjustment at a greater or less distance from the centers of the plates of the studs 21 and 22 is to enable a greater or a less throw to be given to the pawls, and consequently to enable the pistons to be traversed to agreater or less distance in the cylinders for each revolution of the plates 25 and 26 and to insure the expulsion of the paste from the cylinders in the required proportionate quantities.
The breech is mounted upon hinges in order to permit the filling and cleansing of the cylinders and has formed in it the two pas sages 31 and 32. It is alsopierced perpendicularly to the axes of the cylinders with a conical hole destined to receive a two-way ajutage 4. This ajutage 4 will have any one of various forms shaped to produce the required products, the cross-sections of some of which are shown by Fig. 6. It also has inlets from the cylinders, respectively, corre sponding with the passages 31 and 32, so that one inlet communicates with the cylinder 1 and the other with the cylinder 2. j The interior passage through the ajutage 4 commnand it is arranged that at each step of thisv movement a sufficiency of the-combined material is expelled to form a single one of the combined products.
An adjustable cam 35 is carried by the plate 25 and by the continued movement of the plates while the pistons are at rest oscillates the bell-crank lever 37 through contact with the friction-bowl 36 on the arm of that lever. A connecting-rod 38 transmits the motion of the lever to a pawl 39, engaging with the teeth of the ratchet-wheel 13. This pawl is mounted similarly to the pawls 15 and 16, and thus givesa supplementary motion to the piston 5. The outlet edges of the interior orifice of the ajut-age are a little nearer to the vertical plane passing through the centers of the cylinders than are the edges of the exterior orifice, so that the extra quantity of enveloping material in acting laterally upon the core, as seen in Fig. 7, severs the core and interposes a quantity of the enveloping material between the severed ends.
The enveloping material extruded by the supplementary motion of the piston is then cut by the guillotine into two equal parts, one of which forms the back wall of the last severed product and the other part the front wall of the next issuing product. The products are collected by a traveling apron 40, receiving motion from the drum 41, which is driven by any suitable gearing. The guillotine 33 has a reciprocatory motion imparted through the vertical rod 50, crank 51, and cocentric The eccentric is operated on a shaft 53, driven by bevel-gear from vertical shaft 54. Shaft 53 also actuates the belt 40 through rod 55,ratchet-wheel 56, and chain 57.
To effect the return of the pistons, there are fitted on the nut extensions the spurwheels 4:3 and 44, either of which may be engaged with the spur-pinion &2,which is mounted so as to be capable of sliding upon and turning with the vertical shaft, driven by bevel-gearing. (Shown by Fig. 4..) It is arranged that the pinion 42 can be held in any one of three positions by the cranked and forked lever -i5, the upper end of which has a detent capable of engaging with either of three notches in the sector 46. By this arrangement the pinion can be held in either the idle position or in gear with the wheel 43 or with the wheel eta. When engaged with either of these wheels, its rotation insures the lowering of the corresponding piston.
In the foregoing description only two cylinders are shown; but it will be obvious that a greater number may be employed, if desired, in the same machine.
What I claim as my invent-ion, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a machine for the production of enveloped alimentary products,the combination ofaplurality of cylinders, pistons and pistonrods, means for giving a step-by-step motion simultaneously to the pistons, means for giving an additional movement to the piston expelling the enveloping material during the period of rest of the other piston, a breech common to two cylinders and having a passage communicating with each cylinder, a transverse two-way ajutage one of the ways of which communicates with one cylinder and the other with the other cylinder, and a guillotine operated to cut off the enveloped material after each simultaneous step and to cut off the enveloping material extruded by the said additional movement of one of the pistons, substantially as described.
2. In a machine for the production of enveloped alimentary products,the combination of a pair of cylinders and pistons therein, a breech common to both cylinders, passages in the breech communicating with the cylinders, a transverse ajutage having an exterior orifice communicating with one of the breechpassages, and an interior orifice communieating with the other breech-passage, and a guillotine-knife operated at intervals to cut off the issuing products, substantially as set forth.
3. In a machine for the production of enveloped alimentary products, the combination of a pair of cylinders and pistons therein, a breech common to both cylinders, passages in the breech communicating with the cylinders, and a transverse ajutage having an exterior orifice communicating with one of the breech-passages and an interior orifice communicating with the other breech-passage said interior orifice having its outward edges set back, substantially as described.
4. In a machine of the class described, a screw-thread on the external part of each piston-rod, a screw-nut on the screw-threaded part of each piston-rod, a sleeve extension of each screw-nut, a ratchet-wheel fixed on each screw-nut extension, a pawl engaging with the teeth of each ratchet-wheel and limited to a path concentric therewith, means for preventing linear motion of the screwnuts, meansforsynchronouslyoscillatingthepawls, an additional pawl geared with one of the ratchet-Wheels, and means for actuating that ratchet-wheel by the additional pawl during the return strokes of the other two pawls, sub stantially as set forth.
5. In a machine of the class described, a screw-nut fitting upon a screw-thread formed upon the external part of each piston-rod so as to be rotated Without linear motion, a spurwheel concentric with each piston-rod and attached to each screw nut, a spur pinion mounted to slide upon and to be rotated by a shaft parallel with the piston-rods so as to be engaged with either or neither of the spurwheels, and means for sliding the spur-pinion along its shaft and for looking it in temporary engagement with either of the wheels or in a free position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6.
