ClGAR-PIPE.
l-iro ALL vwHoM rr MAY ooNcEnN:
Be it known that I, EDWARD SCHLICHTINQ of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Cigar-Pipe',l and I do'hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled inthe art, to make and use the same, -reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates toa new and improved method of constructing pipes for the smoking of tobacco,
whereby the same are heater in their appearance, and are more convenient to carry, and ai'ord more pleasure to the smoker.
It consists inhthepipe being made `in the form of a cigar, having a chamber in the inside to contain the tobacco to be smoked, 'and having also another chamber, in communication with the former, to receive and4 cool the smoke. It consists alsoof .an attachment to the same, ser-ving at the same time to receive and contain the oil and spittle, andv tolform-a neat and convenient handle by which to hold and carry the same.
The drawing is a central'vei'tical longitudinal section of my invention. I n
A is a hollow fire-proof cylinder; B is a plug, to close the same at one end; c is an orifice in the same; A is the tobacco-chamber `)"lis a screw-thread, on the end of the cylinder A; C'is an attachment t'o the cylinder A; ax is a chamber in the same; e is'themouth-piece; e' is an orifice throughthe mouth-piece e, into the ehamber'a; f is an orifice, communicating with the chamber al, and the chamber A'; D is an attachment to v the part G,\forming a handle; a2 is a screw-thread on the same; H is a chamber in the same. The cylinder A is made of clay or wood, or of porcelain, or any of'the materials of which pipes for the smoking of tobacco are now commonly made, of about the diameter of a cigar, and is made hollow, so as to form a chamber, A', as shown, to receive and contain the tobacco to be smoked, and may be of any convenlent'length, so as to contain anydesired quantity of tobacco. Said chamber A' isclosed at one end by a plug, B. The plug B may be made of clay or othereuitable' material, in any convenient form, to close th'e chamber A', or of a formsuch as is shown in the drawing, so as that the tobacco will not fall from the samewhen carried by the smoker, and is provided with one or more orifices, a, through which air is supplied, for the combustion of the tobacco in the chamber A' said plug B serving for a cover, which may be removed at any time to refill the pipe. Said cylinder A is provided on the other end of the same with a'shoulder and a screwthr'ead,'f, as shown in the drawing. The attachment Gis made of clay, or other suitable material, tapering towards one end, so as, when attached to thecylinder A, the whole will be in the general form of a cigar, as shown. Said attachment C is hollow in the inside, so as to form achambcr, a, and is provided in the larger end of the same with a screw-thread, to receive the screwf, -by means of-which the attachment C is secured to the cylinderA, and so that the same may at anyv time be removed to Abe cleaned. The cylinder A is provided with an orice,f, communicating with the chambers a1 and A', as shown, through which the smoke from the' burning tobacco in the chamber A' is drawn into'the chamber al, the object of the chamber al .being to receive and cool the smoke before the same reaches the mouth of the smoker. To Athe attachment C is secured an attachment, D. Said attachment D is made of" inetal or'wood, or other vsuitable material, and is of the form shown in' the drawing, provided with a screwthread, a2, by means of which the same is secured tothe attachment C, as shown, and is formed on the under side into a ring to serve as a handle for the pipe, being attached to the part C, at right angles to aline run-v ning `longitudinally through the centre of the pipe.` "Saidpart erattachment D is provided on the inside tl1ercoi` with a chamber, H, opening .into the chamber al, the object of the eame being to collect and contain the oil or spittle from the chamber al. Said attachment D may easily be taken out to be cleansed, being attached to the part C by a screw-for that purpose. To the smaller end of the attachment or partC is secured, by a screw-thread, an amber or other mouth-piece, e, in the ordinaryway, said mouth-piece e and attachments C being provided `with an oricc, e',by means of' whichv a communication is opened through the pipe tothe mouth of the-smoker.
The operation is readily seen from the drawing. Constructed as above described, it constitutes a light, neat, and convenient pipe for the smoking of tobacco, the advantages of which arc, that the same is more convenient to carry, and aifords more comfort to the smoker.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim asvnw, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The attachment D, having the chamber H, when attached-to the part C, having the chamber a, as herein shownand described. f
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this day of 1867.
EDWARD SCHLIGHTING.
