To all whom it may concern.- j Be it known thatI, CHARLES F. DOEBLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches; and it consists, substantially, in the improvements 1o hereinafter particularly described. v
Thoughapplicable to wrenches for various purposes in the arts, my improvements are intended more especially for use in connection with wrenches such as 'are employed for i5 gripping upon a pipe or similar device, either to effect a turning movement of the pipe or to enable the same to be held against movement, according to the particular manipulation thereof required.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a wrench of this kind with means whereby the jaws thereof may be readily released or disengaged from the work operated upon, so as to enable the wrench to be 2 5 either turned upon the work or removed therefrom, as may be desired, and also to provide a wrench of this type possessingdurability and increased strength and efficiency.
A furt-her object of the invention is to pro- 3o vide a pipe or similar wrench which is simple in the construction and organization of the parts or elements thereof and one which is capable of ready adjustment to Work of diderent kinds and sizes, besides being light in weight and cheap to manufacture. The above and additional objects are attained by means substantiallysuch as are illustratedin the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a wrench having my improvements embodied in connection therewith, and Fig. 2 i's a top plan view thereof. Figs. 3 and 4 are side views, in part section, of the main elements of the wrench,v the one View showing the manner in which the wrench is applied to a pipe or similar device and the other illustrating the operation for effecting release or disengagement of the jaws of the Wrench from'the pipe. Fig. 5 isa view in perspective of the stationaryjawfand its 5o adjuncts.
p Before proceedingwith a more detailed description it may be stated that for the purpofses of illustration of my improvements I have herein shown the same as employed in connection with a pipe or similar wrench of typical or conventional form; but it will be understood, of course, that I am not limited .thereto in practice, since my improvements are equally effective withwrenches of vari- 6o ous other constructions involving the use of Va rigid or stationary jaw and an adjustable .swinging jaw.
In carrying my invention into ei'ect I provide a handle havinga rigid or stationary jaw, and preferably I employ in connection with said handle a swinging frame or yoke in which is supported -theshank of an adjustable jaw, suitable adjusting devices for said flatter jaw being also supported by the said 7 o swinging frame or yoke by which to adapt the wrench for application to pipes or similar devices of different sizes. Each of the jaws of the Wrench is adapted to engage the pipe on vturning the handle in one direction, and the said rigid or stationary jaw is provided with `means adapted to bear on the'pipe as a fulcrum, whereby on 'turning the handle in the reverse direction the release or disengagement of the jaws from the pipe may be ef. 8o fected, thus enabling the wrench to be either turned upon the pipe or removed therefrom,
as may be desired. Preferably the construction and organization of parts are such that the rigid or stationary jawjmay bel first released or disengaged from the pipe on turning the handle reversely for a limited distance, whereupon by a continued turning of the handle in the same direction the release or disengagement of the adjustable swinging 9o jaw may also be eected. The sim ple release or disengagement of the said rigidor stationary jaw may be sufficient in some instances to enable the wrench to be either turndiiipon or removed from the pipe; but in the event of the adjustable swinging jaw having a very tight or powerful engagement with the pipe it may be necessary to release both the said jaws in the manner stated.
My improvements have been found to be both reliable and effective in use, and they have also been found to greatly facilitate the work required of a wrench of this character.
Specific reference being had to the accompanying drawings by the designating characters marked thereon, A represents the handle of the wrench, which is formed or provided at one end thereof with a rigid or stationary jaw 0 having on its outer face suitable teeth or serrations l), adapted tolengage or take into the surface of a pipe c or other piece of work to which the wrench may be applied. To the rear of said rigid or stationary jaw the said handle is formed or provided on either side thereof with a rib or projection d, occupying a position somewhat above the back or upper edge of the handle, and which ribs or projections constitute a fulcrum or support for a frame or yoke B, the latter being formed or provided on either side thereof with a notch e, in which one of said ribs or projections is received, and being also formed or provided with an extension h2, having therein an opening through which the handle extends, the said opening being sufficiently large between the shorter sides 2 and 3 thereof to permit the frame or yoke B to have a swinging movement upon the said ribs or projections d, as and for the purpose more fully hereinafter explained. ln order that the frame or yoke B may be maintained in proper position relatively to both the handle A and the rigid or stationary jaw a, the handle is also formed or provided on either side thereof with an outstanding pin or projection g, which occupies a position below and to the rear of the rib or projection CZ, adjacent thereto, and the sides of the said frame or yoke are also each formed with a corresponding additional notch m, the edges or sides n of said notches being formed or struck on an arc of a circle of which an axial line drawn through said ribs or projections cl is the center. In this way it will be seen that in the swinging movements of the frame or yoke B the said sides or edges n of the said notches m ride upon the sides of the said pins or projections (j and that such movements are limited by the shorter sides 2 and 3 of the opening in the extension b2 of said frame or yoke.
Working in a suitable space or opening (not shown) therefor in the frame or voke'B is the shank 0 of an adjustable jaw C, which is curved at o2, so as to bring the operative face thereof into proper relation with the corresponding face of the rigid or stationary jaw, the said operative face of the said movable jaw being also 'formed or provided with suitable teeth or seri-ations 5, adapted for engagement with the pipe or other work operated upon. The said shank ois formed with mutilated threads, as shown, by means of which the desired adjustments of the said jaw C are effected through the medium of a nut D, working between the sides ofopenings 6, formed in the sides of the frame or yoke B, as shown.
To successfully carry out the objects of my invention, I provide the inner end of the rigid or stationary jaw a, with means adapted to bear upon the innermost part of the surface of the pipe, whereby on operating the handle of the wrench in a direction the reverse of that requiredrto effect a gripping of the jaws upon the pipe the said jaws may be released or disengaged from the pipe. Said means may be variously constructed, but in the present instance consist, preferably, of duplicate arms or rockers 10, formed integrally with the rigid or stationary jaw and curved in the direction of the operative face of the adjustable swinging jaw, said arms or rockers being separated by a space 12, so as not to interfere with either the adjusting or swinging movements of said latter jaw. The edges of said arms or rockers are curved or rounded off at the ends, as shown, and when the handle of the wrench is turned in the proper direction the said edges are made to bear and turn upon the pipe as a fulcrum in effecting release or disengagement of the teeth of the jaws.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings the operative parts of the wrench are shown in the position they occupy for accomplishing the turning of a pipe or similar device, the handle A having been turned ina right-hand direction to effect the proper gripping of the teeth of the jaws upon the pipe, it being observed that in this position of said jaws the pin or projection g on each side of the handle is capable of still being carried or moved a little deeper into the corresponding notch fm therefor in the side of the swinging frame or yoke B. to effect the release or disengagement of the teeth of the jaws from the pipe the handle A is moved or turned reversely or in the lefthand direction, whereupon the stationaryjaw begins to move outwardly from the pipe, and by the time the said handle has been thus moved or turned to bring the parts of the Wrench to the full-line position shown in Fig. 4 the teeth of the stationary jaw are entirely free of the pipe. At this time the teeth of the adjustable swinging jaw may or may not have been released or,d isen'gaged from the pipe, (this being dependent somewhat upon the force with -which the pipe was engaged thereby in the first instance;) but in any event the back or upper edge of the handle will now be in contact with the side or wall 2 of the opening in the extension of the frame or yoke B, and therefore by continuing to IUU Now

move or turn the handle in the reverse or It is apparent that by constructing the arms or rockers on the stationary jaw at opposite sides of the shank of the adjustable swinging jaw an increased bearing is obtained for performing the operations hereinother device, comprising a handle having a stationary jaw and a swinging jaw, said jaws each being adapted to engage the pipe on turning the handle in one direction, and means adapted to rock on the pipe as a fulcrum to release or disengage the jaws from the pipe on turning the handle in another direction.

A wrench for application to a pipe or other device, comprising a handle having a stationary jaw and an adjustable swinging jaw, said jaws each having means for engaging the pipe on turning the handle in one direction, and means adapted to rock on the pipe as a fulcrum to release or disengage the jaws from the pipe on turning the handle in another direction.
3. A wrench for application to a pipe or other device, comprising a handle having a stationary jaw and an adjustable swinging jaw, said jaws each having means for engaging the pipe on turning the handle in one direction, and means on the stationary jaw adapted to rock on the pipe as a fulcrum to release or disengage the jaws from the pipe on turning the handle in another direction.
4. A wrench for application to a pipe or other device, comprising a handle having a stationary jaw and a swinging jaw, said jaws each having means for engaging the pipe on turning the handle in one direction, and arms adapted to rock on the pipe as a fulcrum to release or disengage the jaws from the pipe on turning the handle in another direction.
5. A wrench for application to a pipe or other device, comprising a handle having a stationary jaw and a swinging jaw, said jaws having means for engaging the pipe on turning the handle in one direction, and arms on the stationary jaw adapted to rock on the pipe asa fulcrum to release or disengage the jaws from the pipe on turning the handle in the reverse direction.
6. A wrench for application to a pipeor other device, comprising a handle having a stationary jaw and a swinging jaw, said jaws each having means for engaging the pipe on turning the handle in one direction, and duplicate arms formed on the stationary jaw at opposite sides of the shank of the said swinging jaw and adapted to rock on the pipe as a fulcrum to release or disengage the jaws from the pipe on turning the handle in the reverse direction.
7. A wrench for application to a pipe or other device, comprising a handle having a stationary jaw anda swingingjaw, said jaws each having means for engaging the pipe on turning the handle in one direction, means adapted to rock o n the pipe as a fulcrum to release or disengage the stationary jaw from the pipe on turning the handle a limited distancein the reverse direction, and means for releasing or disengaginggthe swinging jaw from the pipe on continued reverse turning of said handle.
8. A wrench for application to a pipe or other device, comprisinga handle having a stationary jaw and a swinging jaw, said jaws each having means .for engaging the pipe on turning the handle in one direction, means on the stationary jaw adapted to reckon the pipe Aas a fulcrum to release or disengage said latter jaw from the pipe on turning the handle a limited distance in the reverse direction, and means for releasing or disengaging said swinging jaw from the pipe on continued reverse turning of said handle.
9. A wrench for application to a pipe or other device, comprising a handle having a stationary jaw and a swinging jaw, saidjaws each having means for .engaging the pipe on turning the handle in one direction, arms on the stationary jaw adapted to rock on the pipe as a fulcrum to release or disengage said latter jaw from the pipe on turning the handle a limited distance in the reverse direction, and means for releasing or disengaging said swinging jaw from the pipe on continued reverse turning of said handle.

A wrench for application to a pipe or other device, comprising a handle having a stationary jaw, a yoke pivotally supported on said handle, an adjustable jaw supported by the yoke, said jaws each having means for engaging the pipe on turning the handle in one direction, and means adapted to rock on the pipe as a fulcrum to release or disengage the jaws from the pipe on turning the handle in the reverse direction.
