To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH I-IoLBEIN, of

Evans City, in the county of Butler and State desired ornamentation of pilasters and frieze without interfering with the capability of ad justment of the mantel. The construction is such that the mantel can be readily knocked down for shipment, packed in small space,

and easily set up and adjusted with very little labor or cutting and when in position will present the appearance of a specially design edor fitted mantel. I

The invention resides particularly in-the connection between the pilasters and frieze-. board as hereinafter more particularly described and claimed, and the accompanying drawings illustrate a mantel embodying my invention. H

Figure 1 is a front view of the mantel with one pilaster connected to frieze-board and the other offset therefrom. Fig. 2 is a similar rear View of Fig. 1. In saiddrawings, A represents thet'riezeboard of the mantel, supporting the shelf B, and it may be ornamented in any desired manner. To the lower edge of and rear side of the frieze-board A is attached ;a depending finishing-strip O, which is shorter than the frieze-board and of a thickness corresponding to the thickness of the upper portion of the pilasters, which extend behind the friezeboard. The pilasters are preferably made compound, and, as shown, each consists of two parallel" rear strips'or barsD :E united by an intermediate overlying'parallel. facing-board F, which maybe ornamented in any desired manner. When thepilasters'are in position, the upper end of strip-D abuts against the lower edge of board 0. By cutting offthe ends of stripO the pilasters can be adjusted nearer to eacho'ther, and the height of the mantel canbe'redu ed by cutting off thelower ends of the pilasters. When adjustedto desiredjsiza the pilasters are sozcured by nailing or screwing theupper ends of strips E to the board A, and-the ends of strip D may be likewise fastened to board F, as indicated in the'drawings. The usual finishingmolding-strip G Q can be attached to the lower edge of the strip 0 and inner edges of thefstrip C and inner edges of boards D, and if the pilasters areto. be brought closer together it is simply necessary'to remove the strip G,-cut it the proper length, and replace it afterthe'mantel is in position.

-It will be observed that by having the fastenings between pilasters and frieze-board at the extreme outside pieces it is possible to make the mantels in the greatest variety of designs without interfering with their capability for adjustment or kno cking down. No cutting of the frieze-board or of the pilasters is required for lateral-adj ustment of the mantel, and merely cutting the bases of pilasters provides for the vertical adjustment.

Having thus described my invention, what I therefore claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon, is-

1. A knockdown oradjustable mantel, havingafrieze-board,afinishing-stripon the lower side of board, provided with recesses forming tongues on its lower edge near its opposite ends; pilasters having upstanding strips extending behind and adapted to be fastened to the frieze-board, a facing portion adapted to abut the lower edge of the frieze-board, and an inner portion having a rabbeted upper end forming a slot for engagement with the tongue on the adjacent end of said finishing-strip, substantially as described.

2. In a knockdown or adjustable mantel, the combination of the frieze-board, a finishing-strip at the lower side thereof provided with recessed portions on its rear side and lower edge forming tongues; laterally-adjustable pilasters comprising parallel strips and a facing-board, the outermost strip extending up in rear of and adapted to be fastened to the frieze-board, the facing-board extending up to and abutting against the lower edge of the frieze-board, and the inner strip extending up to the finishing-strip, and having its upper end rabbeted to form a groove for the reception of the tongues on the finishing-strip, substantially as described.

3. The herein-designed knockdown and adjustable mantel, comprising a frieze-board, a shelf attached to the upper edge thereof, a finishing-strip attached to the rear side thereof and extending below the same, said finishing-board having tongues c at its ends; with the laterally-adjustable pilasters composed of parallel strips and an outer facing-board con meeting said strips, the outermost strip extending up behind the frieze-board and abutting against the shelf, the facing-board extending up to and abutting against the lower edge of the frieze-board, and the inner strip extending up to the finishing-strip and having its upper end rabbeted at d for the engagement with the adjacent tongue 0 on the finishing-strip, all substantially as described.
