Description

Patented May 12, 190'i.
PATIENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK OLSON, OF CALUMET, MICHIGAN.
FLUE-SCRAI'D'ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,994, dated May 12, 1903..
Application led August l1, 1902.
,To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, FREDERICK OLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing in Oalumet, in the county of Houghton, State of Michigan, have invented aMachine for Scraping Flues; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to iiuescrapers; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter1 described.
The object of the invention is to provide a scraper having adjustable scraping-plates adapted to operate in tlues of various sizes.. The scraper may be located permanently in the fluewithout interfering with the draft thereof land maybe operated periodically for cleaning the iiue. It also permits the flue to be cleaned Without the operator going upon the roof.
The device is simple and strongin construction, andis easily operated, and does not damage the lining of theue While in operation.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the top part of the device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of one of the strip-supports. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the scraper plates or blades. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional vieW of a castingJ used on the top part of the device. Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional View of the casting shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a sectional view of one of the plates for securing the scraper-blades together. j Fig. Sis
' a side elevation of a pin for securing the bladeretaining plates together. Fig. 9'is a sectional view of another blade-retaining plate used in the invention. Fig. 10is a transverse sectional view of a roller used in the top part of the device. j l
The device consists of the top 1, which is provided at its middle with a castingV 2, in which is j ournaled a roller 3. The said casting 2 at its longitudinal edges is provided with the anges 4 4 and just above saidflanges With the grooves 5 5. The inner ends of the `metallic strips 6 are bifurcated and are adapted to lit in the grooves 5 5, said inner ends being provided with the perforations 7, which Serial. Nol 119,344. (No model.)
are adapted to receive the ends of the inverted-U-shaped staples 8, the middle portion of said staples passing over the top of the casting 2 and being secured against the under .side of said casting by means of nuts 9. The
outer ends of the strips 6 are bent at an angle, as at 10, and are adapted to pass down along the sides of the upper edges of the tine. The periphery of the wheel 3 is grooved, and the endless chain 11 passes over said Wheel in said groove. It will be seen that'the strips 6 may be adjusted in or out, according to the breadth of the flue, and when properly adjusted are firmly held in proper positions relative to each other by means of the securing- The pin 18 is provided with an eye 19, to
which is linked the opposite end of the chain 1l. The perpendicular portion of thesaid chain, which is directly opposite the plates 15 and 16, passes through the scraper proper in the space between the bars 12 12. It will thus be seen that the-scraper-blades l1 may be adjusted in or out to lit the flune.
I donot bind myself to any particular size for lthe parts of my invention, as dimensions may be varied to meet the requiredV strain. The top of the scraping apparatus 4being rmly secured atthe top ofJthe chimney-'Hue and the endless chain being of sulicient length is dropped Vdown the chimney:
To operate the device, the operator pulls "alternately at either side of the'V chain, and
this causes the scraping-blades'to pass the entire length of the'iiue, anda thorough cleaning is accomplished. The apparatus can be left hanging inthe flue ready for -use or can be easily removed after the tlue is cleaned.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
IOO
A Hue-cleaner comprising a top part haw chain passing over said roller and carrying to ing a central casting with roller journaled suitable scraping-blades. therein, said castinghaving at its lower edges In testimony whereof I affix my signature longitudinal [langes Wih goovrs locate in presence of tWo Witnesses. above the same stri s a a, te to e secure at their ends to 7the pue and) being bifurcated FREDERKK OLSON at their inner ends, said bifurcation adapted Vitnesses: to enter grooves of the castings, a means for OLAF A. OLSON, securing said strips to the castings and a S. E. GAGNIER.
