T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it,.known that I, JAMES II. CARKEET, of the city and county ofA Montgomery, in the State of Alabama, have invented anew'and improved modeoi` relieving friction, or of transmitting the motion and friction between the axle and the bearing, or revcrsely, between the bearing and the axle,ofmachinery, or vehicles offany description; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and gures marked thereon,` to wit:
vFiffure 1,N o. 1 ers ective view of axle; Nos. 2, 4, and 6, ers eetive view of the hollow e linders around c, ,p p r P y each other, enclosing the axle.`
Figure 2, side view of the bearings; No. 1, endview of the axle; Nos. 2, 4and 6, end vie'w of hollow cylinders around each other, enclosing the axle.
Figure 3, perspective view of the shaft; No. 1, the'axl e, around which the cylinders are fitted; No. 2, end view of thc axle. i
Figure 4, No. 2, perspective view of thelcylinder, which is placed immediately on theaxle, as seen in No. 2, iig. 1; No. 3, end view of the cylinder.
Figure 5, No. 4, perspective view of the cylinder iitted o n No. 2, fig. 4, as seen in fig. 1No. 4; No. 5, end view of said cylinder. 7
Figure 6, No. 6,*perspective view' of the cylinder fitted over thc preceding one, as seen in iig. 1, No. 6;
No. 7, end-view of said cylinder.
Figure 7, side view of box or, bearing, showing the end view of the cylinder in position, by removing part ofthe front plate. i
To enable others skilled in .mechanism to construct. and use my invention, I will proceed'to describe its construction in detail. i
I first prepare the axle, as seen in 'the drawing, iig. 3, No. l, after which I construct theliollmv cylinder o f wrought or cast iron, or other suitable material-or -metalyand 'tit it-to the -axl/e, as above described, and so, in like manner, I prepare and fit, one aroundthe other, any desirable number ofcylinders. I regulate the thickness of the cylinders according to the'rnature, size, and weight of the machinery or vehicle towhich they are to be applied. They are kept in their position by side plates, 'which form thelinner and vouter sides of the box, extending partly around and near to or covering the end of the axle, as may be desirable. If'the cylinders are made of iron, I leave suiicient room between them for Babbit or other metal.
Wha't I' claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters lPatent, is-
Theapplicatjon of hollowl cylinders to thc relief of friction, as above substantially describcd and sctiforth.
