' or same PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 70,560, dated November 5, 1867.
IMPROVED GAR-WHEEL.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN HARRIS, of Marquette, in the county of Green Lake, and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car- Vheels; and I do hereby declare that thc following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a central cross-section of a car-wheel, showing my improvement.
Figure 2 is a side view.

This invention relates to an improvement in the construction of railroad-car wheels, for which Letters Patent were granted to me, No. 50,579, dated October 24, 1865. My improvement consists in making the flanges on the hub of the wheel, and the plate fastened thereon, with spaces between them and the outer rim or body of the wheel for containing oil and packing for lubrication of the parts, while, at the same time, they are held together solidly, as hereinafter more particularly described.
The car-wheel is made with a hub, B, fitted in the rim D, fastened together by bolts 1; bpassing through a plate, 01. The hub B is cast with a wide flange, a, the inner part of which, at the periphery, is formed with a tongue, 0, that fits in a corresponding groove in the rim D, while between the hub and the tongue c a space is left between the flange and the rim, for receiving a packing charged with lubricating oil, as shown in fig. 1. The binding plate d is also fitted to the rim D with a. tongue, 0', on its periphery, in same manner as the flange a, having a similar space for lubricating packing between it and the rim. 7
The object of my invention, for which Letters Patent were granted to me as aforesaid, was to allow a cartruck to pass over the curves in the road without subjecting either the axles or the wheels to any undue or excessive strain, by means of the revolving movement of the rim, independent of the hub on the axle, which object is accomplished more efiectually by my present improvement.
Having described my invention, I claim'as new, andcdesire to secure by Letters Patent- The flanges c 0, upon the hub 13 and plate 01, forming the chambers for the lubricating material upon the sides of the rim D, as herein shown and described, for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 24=th day of March, 1867..
' JOHN HARRIS.
