RACK OR HOLDER FOR VULCANIZING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,856, dated May 12, 1903. Application filed September 13, 1902. Serial No. 123,291. (Nu model.)
To all whom it nmy concern..-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. SMITH, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusettshave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Racks or Holders for .VulcanizingApparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for holdi ingelongated articles, such as lengths of metallic tubing which have been coated with a hard-drying liquid composition, such as japan, the holder being adapted for insertion in an oven in which the liquid coats of a series of articles are to be baked or vulcanized.
The invention consists in the improved holder, which I will now proceed to describe and-claim.
Of the accompanying drawings,'forming a part 01' this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a holder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig.3 represents a perspective view of a portion of the base or bottom head of the holder. Fig. 4 represents an enlargement of a portion of Fig. 2.
The same reference letters indicate the same parts in all the drawings.
In the drawings, a represents a bottom head or base which is a preferably fiat metal plate of substantial thickness, having a series of orifices (0' extending through it from its top to its bottom surface. On the walls of said orifices are formed thin-edged ribs or wingsff, each orifice having a set of wings, preferably three in number, although the number may be varied. Each set of wings f constitutes a rest for the lower end of elongated articles d, such as a length of tubing.
connects with the space between the wings, into which the lower end of the article d projects, and provides for the escape by drainage of any surplus liquid that flows downwardly from the coated surfaces of the article (1.
b represents a top plate or head which is of substantially the same area as the base a and is rigidly connected to the latter by a series' of uprights c c, the head 5 being separated from the base a by a space of sufficient height to receive the major portions of the articles d. The top head b is provided with a series of orifices e, each formed to loosely surround the upper end portion of one of the .cles bearing on the rests and articles (I and permit endwise movement of the said article. The orifices e correspond in number and position with the orifices a in the base a, so that a corresponding number of articles (Z may be supported vertically and parallel with each other by the conjoint at. tion of the rests in the base a and the walls of the orifices e in the top head I). o
It will be seen that the thin-edged ribsf are adapted to support the lower ends of the articles cl, while affording the minimum area of contact with the coated surfaces of said articles. The ribs f are preferably provided with inclined faces f, so that the actual contact between the articles (1 and the rests is limited to the angles formed by the junction of the external surfaces and the lower ends 76 of said articles, as illustrated in Fig. 4. The orifices e in the top head b are of sufficient size to permit theinsertion of the articles by inqining the articles and sliding them upwardlyin the orifices c and then swinging in their lower ends and depositing them on the ifibs'f. Means are provided for suspending the holder and its charge of articles at and for lowering the holder into and raising it from a body of the coating liquid. Means 89 may also be provided for supporting the holder from an overhead track, so thatit r 'r be readily moved into and out of a Vulcan. ing-oven.
I claim A holder for elongated arti l lengths of tubing, comprisi head or base having a pl the lower ends of the artic ing composed of a group of r1 having thin 90 edges arranged to bear on the lower end of one of the articles, the base having also drainage-openings communicating with the spaces between the ribs for the escape of surplus liquid from the articles, and secondly, a top head rigidly connected with the base and having a plurality of orifices formed to loosely surround the upper end portions of the artipermit endwise such as a bottom movement of said articles.
In testimony whereof I have aifixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM R. SMITH.
