COMBINED ASH- RECEIVER AND MATCH-SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,821, dated May 12, 1903. Application filed May 13, 1902. Serial No. 107,140. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID P. MooDY,a citi zen of the United States, residing at Rich-- mond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Ash-Receiver and Match-Safe, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined ash receiver and match-safe adapted to be attached to the under side of table-ledges and like covering projections; and the object in View is to provide a simple and effective device for use by smokers conveniently combining a match safe or receptacle and a removable ash-receiver, which are adapted to be moved under a table-ledge or other projection when not in use.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of an ash-receiver and match-safe embodying the features of the invention and shown detached. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the improved device shown applied to a support. T
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts inthe views.
The improved device comprises a bodyplate 1, without upper-surface projection, care being taken to construct the upper surface or side of the body-plate perfectly fiat,
' so that it may snugly fit under a table-ledge or other support to which it is applied. In the center of the plate 1, near one end, an opening 2 is formed forthe reception of a securing-screw or analogous device 3, which will form a pivot or fulcrum for-the entire device as well'as a means of securing it to the under side of the table-ledge or othersupport. At about a central point a rectangular opening 4 is cutthrough the body-plate, and secured to the under side of the latter below the opening is a closed receptacle 5, which depends any suitable distance and in accordance with its capacity, the sides and ends of the said receptacle being practically in vertical alinement with the side and end walls of the opening 4. The body-plate 1 has its upper surface formed or provided with roughened or striking surfaces 6 for the ignition of matches, which are adapted to be held in the receptacle 5. Outwardly from the receptacle 5 the body-plate is constructed with a reduced neck 7, and continuous with the neck is an annular head 8, having an inner peripheral groove 9 to receive the flange 10 of' an ash-receiver 11, which also, depends a suitable distance below the under side of the body-plate. The flange 10 of the ash-receiver through the formation of the groove 9 is flush with the upper surface of the bodyplate or with the head 8, so that no obstruction will exist to the free disposition of the entire device'under the table-ledge or other support when not in use andas clearlyshown by Fig. 2.
When the device is used, it is drawn outwardly to expose the inletopening 4. to the match-receptacle 5 and the ash-receiver, and a convenient attachment is provided for the use of smokers. At any time desired the ash-receiver may be emptied by removing the same from the head 8, it being preferred to slightly taper or converge the said receiver toward its bottom for convenience in removal 7 and application.-
Though the preferred form of the device has been shown and described, it will be understood that changes in the shape, proportions, dimensions, and minor details may be resortedto without departingfrom the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is- A device of the class set forth, comprising a flat body-plate adapted to be pivotally at* tached at one end to a support and having an opening formed therein at an intermediate point and also provided with an annular head at the loose extremity, the said head having an inner groove, a match-receptacle immovably attached to the body-plateunder the opening formed in the intermediate portion of the latter, said match-receptacles tending longitudinally of the plate and'fully closed at its ends and having curved sides and extending longitudinally of the body,-
the plate on opposite sides of the entrance to the match-receptacle having match-striking ICO roughened surfaces thereon extending longi tudinally thereof, and an ash-receiver removably mounted in the said annular head and having an upper flange to engage the groove in the head, whereby the entire upper surface of the body-plate will be smooth and unbroken by projections so that the plate may be closely held under a supporting device.
