PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK C. EVANS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FASTENING FOR GARMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,771, dated May 12, 1903.
Application filed June 1611902.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LFREDERIOK G. EVANS, a citizen of the United States of 'America, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for Garments and the Like, of which the following is a description.
My invention belongs to that class of devices adapted to secure together the proximate edges or parts of garments and the like-such, for example, as hooks and eyes, ball-and-socke't fastenings, &c.-and has for its object the production of a simple fastentening which will not easily become accidentally disengaged in handling the garment, as frequently occurs in the use of hooks and eyes and the devices heretofore known for this purpose.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts, Figure l is a View showing my improvement as applied to a garment. Fig. 2 shows the parts detached from the garment, showing their construction and the manner of their engagement with one another. Fig. 3 shows the parts detached from one another. Fig. 4 shows a modified form of one part.
In the drawings, 1 1 represent parallel bars, preferably connected to one another, but slightly separated to form an open slot between the two.
2 represents the complemental or companion piece provided with a base adapted to be secured upon the garment and a raised head 3, adapted to be positioned longitudinally between the bars 1 1 when by a partial turn the head 3 will be positioned behind the bars 1 1 and in engagement therewith; The parts may be made from Wire bent into the proper form, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and t, or they may be of cut metal, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. In either case the essential features are the same and the operation and results substan- As shown in Fig. 4, the
Serial No. 111 ,844. (No model.)
bars 1 1 may, if preferred, be provided with a portion bent out of the direct line, as shown at 4. 4. When the first member is constructed in this form, it is obvious that when the parts are suitably engaged the head 3 will be positioned within the bent portions 4 4, thus giving stability to the device and aiding in preventing accidental disengagement of the parts.
Any preferred means may be employed for securing the parts to the garment or other base. Thus the device may be provided with loops, asshown in the figures.
The mode of operation is apparent. By turning proximate parts of the garment slightly the two parts may be-readily engaged, as indicated, the head '3' being .positioned behind or back of the parallel bars 1 1. The side or partial turn of the members is maintained by the position in which they are secured to the garment, which also maintains the parts in such position.
It is obvious that accidental disengagements are reduced to a minimum, it being almost impossible to disengage the two unless intentionally and by reversing the operation for engaging them. Thus the'neck will be centrally retained at the enlarged section 6 6.
Having thus described my improvement,
it is obvious that various modifications may be made without departingfrom the spirit of my invention. HenceI do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form and construction shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Batent, is
1. In a device of the kind described, a single piece of Wire bent to inclose a parallelogram having parallel bars 1 1 and provided with securingloops at the corners thereof, in combination with a complemental member provided with a base 2, adapted to.
be secured upon a garment, and a head 3, constructed to be passed between the parallel bars 1 1 and given a quarter-turn to engage the same, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the kind described, a single piece of wire bent to inclose a paral= lelogram provided with parallel bars 1 I having formed therein central bends 4:4, and the bent; por tions 4 4, substantially as deprovided with securing-loops at the corners scribed.
thereof in combination with a complemental 1 1 member provided with a base 2, adapted to BREDERHK EVANS 5 be secured to a garment, and a head 3, con- \Vitnesses:
strncted to be passed between the parallel JOHN WV. HILL,
bars 1 1 and given a quarter-turn to engage CHARLES I. COBB.
