PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED H. VVI-IITESIDE AND SAMUEL G. CAMPBELL, OF LOGANSPORT, INDIANA.
BOOKBINDERS VISE.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 727,520, dated May 5, 1903.
Application filed May 28, 1902. Serial No. 109,34A- (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALFRED H. WHITESIDE and SAMUEL G. CAMPBELL, citizens of the United States, risiding at Logansport, in the county of Cass and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bookbinders Vises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bookbinding, and has special reference to an improved bookbinders vise or stand comprising means for permitting of the free use of both hands in the operation of lettering, gilding, or otherwise finishing the back of a book.
To this end the invention contemplates a simple and practical construction of vise designed to support books of various sizes in an upright position within convenient reach of the bookbinder and also in such a manner that the book can be very quickly removed and replaced.
In carrying out these general objects the invention contemplates a construction adapted for general use as a bookbinders vise for holding the books clamped in astationary or rigid position for any purpose.
With these and many other objects in View, which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
The essential features of the invention involved in the means for adj ustably supporting the book and also in the adjustable and releasable means for clamping the book in its upright position are necessarily susceptible to considerable modification without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention; but a preferred embodiment of the latter is shown in the accompanying drawings, in
tional View of the Vise, showing one of the ways in which it may be conveniently secured to a work table or bench. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view showing more plainly the hinged connection between, 3 the swinging bracket andthe adjustable clamp-carrier. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view showing the slip-clutch connection between the adjustable clamp-carrier or carrier-arm and the supporting member or cleat. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view on the line 5 5 of Fig, 2
Like reference-numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
In carrying out the invention there is necessarily employed a fixed member or element, against which the book is clamped, and usually this fixed member or element is in the form of an upright fiat clamping-base 1, which is sufficiently wide at the upperportion there of to provide an extended surface, upon which one side of the book bears when clamped up in the vise. The said fiat clamping-base 1 may be supported in any convenient manner, but is usually arranged in an upright position and is designed to be fastened to a work table, bench, or other point convenient to the bookbinder. A simple means of mounting the upright clamping-base 1 of the vise in .proper operative position is shown in the drawings and essentially consists in rigidly securing to the rear side of the base, at or contiguous to the upper end thereof, a transverse cleat or bar 2, constituting the supporting member of the vise and having associated therewith a fastening-clamp 3, also secured to the rear side of the upright base and below the plane of the cleat or bar 2, the screw member i of the clamp 3 being adapted to work against the under side of the work table or bench, whereby the latter may be clamped between said clamp 3 and the cleat 2, thus providing for rigidly yet detachably fastening the vise in an operative upright position.
To provide for the support of a book and also for supporting books of greatly-varying sizes, there is associated with the upright clamping-base l a vertically-adjustable rest-platform 5, projected outwardly fromthe fixed base 1 and having its supporting-surface for the book disposed at right angles to the adjacent side of the base, whereby the book may rest upon edge on the platform 5 and be clamped with its side flat against the base member 1.
Various expedients may be resorted to in providing for the vertical adjustment of the rest-platform 5 and also for locking the same fast in its adjusted position. Alpreferable construction is shown in the drawings, and consists in fastening the rest-platform 5 to an adjustable slide 6, adjustable longitudinally upon the clamping-base l and essentially consisting of the oppositely-arranged bindingplates 7 and 8, disposed, respectively, upon opposite sides of the base and one of which carries the intermediate slide-block 9, working in the slotted guideway 10, formed longitudinally in the base and usually extending the full length thereof, as shown in the drawings. The locking-screw 11 passes through the binding-plates 7 and 8 and a nut 12. This locking-screw 11 when tightened serves to clamp up the separate members of the slide 6, thus securely fastening the rest-platform 5 in any adjusted position.
The clamping of the book against the fiat base 1 is accomplished through the medium of an adjustable clamp 13, working in opposition to the base 1 at the outer side thereof. This clamp-jaw has a swiveled connection 14 with the inner end of a clamping-screw 15, having a hand-wheel 16 at its other end and working through a nut 17, carried at the swingingor free end of a swinging bracket or bracket-arm 18. To permit of the adjustment inward and outward of the clamp-jaw 13 without turning thereof, said jaw preferably has a loosely-interlocked slidable connection with the bracket or bracket-arm 18. A preferable form of this connection is shown in the drawings and comprises a keeper consisting of a pair of spaced holding-pinslQ, projected outward from the outer side of the clamp-jaw and sufficiently long to permit of a considerable adjustment of the clamp-jaw. The outer end portion of the bracket 18 is hinged by the hinge-pin 20 to the outer end of an adjustable clamp carrier 21. The hinge-pin 20 for the bracket 18 is disposed longitudinally with reference to the carrier 21 and transversely with reference to the bracket 18, which is rounded ofi at its rear end, as shown in Fig. 3, whereby the same may swing upwardly and laterally to provide for moving the clamp in and out of operative position, according as the book is to be mounted in position or removed. At the point of the hinge connection between the bracket and its supporting-carrier 21 the latter is provided with a transversely-disposed seat 22 in its upper side, within which seat the bracket 18 lies flush when in its lowered operative position. It will here be noted that the bracket 18 and the carrier-arin 21 constitute a support for the jaw 13.
The adjustable clamp-carrier 21 is preferably in the form of a straight bar and usually extends through a clutch-opening 25, formed in one end portion of the cleat or bar 2. One wallof the clutch-opening 25 is formed with a binding swell or projection 26, against which the carrier or bar 21. is rocked or pressed when the clamping-screw 15 is tightened up. By reason of this construction it is obvious that the locking of the clamp-carrier 21 is automatic, but when the screw 15 is loosened the said bar may be readily slid through the clutch-opening to accommodate the clamp to any size book.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction, operation, and many advane tages of the herein described bookbinders vise will be readily apparent without further description, and it will also be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. In a vise of the class described, a fixed upright base, a substantially horizontal restplatform adjustable vertically on the base, and a support having a jaw-carrying member mounted to move vertically into and out of an operative position with respect to the base, the space between and above the base and the jaw-carrying member being unobstructed to give access to the back of a book when held in the vise.
