AUGUST SWANSON, OF RED WING, MINNESOTA.
ALBUM.
:PECIFICATION forming part of Letters-Fatent No. 727,022, dated. May 5, 1903.
I Application filed March 24, 1902. E erialNO. 99,606- (No model.) A 4 T0 on whom it may concern: Be it known that I, AUGUST SWANsON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Red Ting, in the county of Goodhue and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Albums; and I do declare the following to beafull, clear, and exact description of the-invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which. it appertains tomake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part oflthisspecification.
My invention relates to improvements inin the accompanying drawings, in whicl1- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my complete album closed. Fig. 2 is an end view of the album opened and with pictures in dotted lines. Fig. 3.is a top View of the album opened and with the cover and some of the picture-holding clasps removed. Figs. 4 and 5 are modifications of the picture-holding clasps. Fig. 6 is an end view of one of the clasps with two pictures held in it. Fig. 7 is a further modification of the picture-holding clasp. Fig. 8 is an end view of Fig. 7.- Fig.
9 is an end view of the album, showing a modi-' fication in the arrangement of its cover; and Fig. 10 is a front View of a portion of Fig. 3, showing more clearly the brace 4 and its slot sliding on the peg 5.
Referringjto the drawings by referencenumerals, the case of the album consists of the bottom 1, and the end pieces 2 2, hinged at 3 to the bottom, so as to fold outward to a level position with the bottom, in which position they are held by the braces 4, (shown in Fig. 3,) which are slidable .in' theirupper; point of fastening 5, which secures them 'to the only rigid side 6 ofthe album. Toth'e top of the side 6 is hinged at '7 the cover 8, to which the side 9 of thecaseis secured. Thisis my preferred style of the case, while I may also put leaning toward the left.
As a substitute for leaves in the album I provide a series of wire clasps 15, which are hinged to the bottom of the case by staples 16, preferably in the manner showndn Figs. 4 and 5.
In either form the claspis made flexible enough to receive and 7 hold between its upper parts either; a single portrait or picture 17 or'two of them turned back to back, as in Fig. 6, and it is evident thatjhe pictures may be put with either bottom end or one of the longer edges inthe clasps, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, where is also indicated that small pictures may be placed one in each half of the clasp.
Inorder to house the greatest possible number of pictures in the album, I provide upon each end wall of the case clasps 18, under which pictures may be held, like,19 .in Fig. 3.
It will be readily understood that the spring- Wire clasp 5, being made of spring-wire, holds by spring force the cards or pictures between the crossingbars 20and 21 in Fig. 5,.while the bows 22 23 also help to hold and support the pictures. It willfurther be understood that in the use of the album the pictures, with their clasps, are turned from side to side like leaves of a book and when released from the hand will-restin a slanting pile toward one or both end walls 2, which support the first part of the pile, as shown to the right in Fig. 3 and indicated by the two empty clasps It will..also,be understood that the wire clasps'and'staples are placed zigzag on the bottom of the case, which gives the clasps a chance to fold more horizontally than if the crossings of the wire in one clasp were allowed to meet the crossed wires of the next clasp. Finally it will be understood that the pictures are prevented The clasp may alsobe made of sheet metal, like 15 in Figs. Z and 8, and secured by a long staple or wire 16*.
4 supporting said end pieces in a horizontal position; the cover and one side of the case being hinged so as to open the ease and exhibit the pictures properly, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST SWANSON. Witnesses:
