Bc it known that I, CORNELIUS ST. JOHN, of Charlestown, in Vthe county o-fMi-ddlesex, and State of Massa` chusetts, have invented an Improved Sun-Shade; and do hereby declare the same to-be fully described in the following specification, and represented in *the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, and

Figure 2 a longitudinal section of it as open.

Figure 8 is a side view of it as closed. v Y i In such drawings, A denotes the stick oi' the shade, which is like that of a common-parasol, and as provided with a spring-catch, a. It also has a' thin arm,","extended' laterally from it, near its' upper end; 'suchfarm being provided with a hole, c, to receive and support a metallic ring, d, which goes through all the folds of the upperpart of the body portion B of the shade. Such body part B is formed of a long strip of paper, corrugated orfolded vinmanner as shown in Figure 4, and joined at its twoends; such being like expansive-paper lampshades inwcommon use. Above the ring D is 'a cap or collar, e,iitted upon the stick. 'An expander, C, encompasses and slides upon the stick; such expander being made of a single piece of wire,lrst bent in a circle, and next downward from the circle, at an acute angle to its plane, and afterward ina helix; the whole being as Vshown in Figure 5, which is a perspective view of 'tbe expander. By pressing the expander upward with the body B, and above the spring-catch a, the said body may beexpanded somewhat ,like that of an umbrella when open. The expandenwhen in the position as shown in iig. 3, also serves to encompass the body` and keep it closed. In order yto render the paper body'more durable, a strip of. cloth may be pasted alongeach edge of it.

This is particularly advisable with respect to its upper edge or part whichis supported by the ring d. The sunshade so Aconstructed can be made very cheap, Aand still be very useful. Y

My invention, although analogous to a commonparnsol or umbrella, differs therefrom in not having any frame or ribs and braces. It also di`ers in Vthe body, and in the device for effecting the expansion of the body;

such device infmy shade being made so as not only to be capable of being used in expanding the body, and keeping it expanded, but oi' holding it closed when it may be in a closed state. p

I claim, as a new or improved article of manufacture, and -as my invention,lthe sun-shade, as composed of the stick A, thevcorrugated paper body B, and the metallic expander C, made and Yarranged substantiallyl in manner and so as to operate as described. l

I also' claim the expander C, made as explained, that is, of a single piece of wire, first bent in a circle, and next downward from'thc circle, at an acute angle to` itsv plane, and afterward in a helix, the whole'being as shown in the drawings.
