Letters .Patent No. 72,692, dated December 24, 1867.

@te Sttrhule einen tu 4im Ilgrse tttft atmt rmt mittag 1nd uitte sume,
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, AMOS M. SMITH, of Chicago, in the countylof Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash-Locks; and I do hereby declare and make known that the following is a full, clear, and exa'ct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters and figures marked thereon, which form part of this specification. l
'My invention relatesto a novel device to be applied upon window-sash, being particularly applicable to the windows of passenger-coaches on railroads, whereby the windows are automatically and securely locked upon being closed, while the force eiierted in opening the window, when desired, voperates to unlock the same, so that it may be readily opened, as hereinafter more fully described.
.To enable those skilled in the art to understand howto construct and use my said invention, I will proceed to describe the same with particularity, making reference in so doing to the drawings aforesaid, in which- Figure 1 represents a front exterior view of my invention', i Figure a transverse vertical section of the same.
Figure 3 is an interior rear view thereof, and Figure 4 represents a side and end view of the plate secured upon the bott-'Jin of the window-frame. Similar letters of reference in the several figures "indicate the same parts of my invention. A represents the lower cross-piece of the sash-frame, the plate B, beneath which the lock is arranged, being set into a mortise or depression at about the middle point from side to side, in such a manner as to show non-e ot' the appliances for fastening the saine, lugs bib being inserted in the wood, and the lower edge of said plate B being secured by screws f in the lower edge of the sash, as shown in fig. 2. There isa slot, a, in said plate B, through which projects a lifter, L, whereby the sash is raised up, when desired. The said lifter L is attached to a plate, C, which is provided with stationary jaws D D, enclosing the upper ends of the arms E, as shown, said arms being pivoted at e e, and being provided with hooks d 0l to seize upon the barbed stationary bolt H, which is attached upon a plate, F, which is secured upon the window-stool S, as seen in fig. 2. The plate C has a vertical moveinent, being guided in the proper direction, by pins c e, in slots through the same, as shown. Springs t L press the lower ends of the levers E down over the shoulders upon the stationary bolt H, and thus lock the sash when the window is closed.
When the lifter L'is raised in the act of raising the sash, it draws up the jaws D upon the plate C, which draws the upper ends of said levers E together, and throws the lower ends d d apart, thus releasing the bolt, and allowing the sash to be raised asvde'sired. Thuis the device acts as a lifter and lock combined.
Having described the construction and operation of my invention, I will now specify what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
1. I claim the combination of the lifter L, jaws D, and levers E, arranged and operating substantially as and for Athe purposes specified. I 2. I claim, in combination with the above, the arrangementvof thc bolt H,voperatingas shown and described.
3. I claim the arrangement of the springs t h, in combination with said levers E and bolt Il, substantially as and operating as set forth.
AMOS M. SMITH.
