GEORGE BROS H TS, OF RANCHS GAP, PENNSYLVANIA. Letters Patent No. 70,795, dated November 12, 1867- i v IMPROVED SASH-FASTBNER.
TO ALL WHOM; IT MAY cononam Be it known" that I, GEORGE BROSIUS, of Ranchs Gap, in 'the'county of Clinton, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andexact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in sash-fasteners. The breaking of window-weight cords, the difiiculty and annoyance of putting in new ones, and the rattling of the guillotine window, have stimulated the invention of various devices dispensing with the sash-weights, and providing for the locking of the sash; and to this .class of devices the present invention belongs.
It consists of a cam, operating in connection with a spring, and a bolt, which is operated by an arm attached to the axis of the cam. The whole is operated by a cord which passes over a knob or pulley on the front of the sash-frame. I
The accompanying drawing is a front view of my improved sash-fastener, with part of the front plate of the box-cover removed to show the spring and its attachment.
A is the sash-frame, B the window-sash, C the box, between the walls whereof the cam D is journalled at d. E is a spring, of rubber or other suitable elastic material, secured at .one end by the pin or rivet-e, between the walls of the box 0, andfat theother end to the cam D, which it'holds in place against the window-sash B.
To an arm, F, secured to the axis d of the cam G, is attached the cord G, which passes through the batten H, hollowed out at h to give room for the play of the arm F, and thence passes over the knob or pulley I on the front face of the frame. The notched arm K, attached to the airis d of the cam, receives the spur e of the bolt L, and as the lever F is drawn forward, by pulling on the cord G, the arm K throws back the bolt- L. On releasing the cord, the spring E draws back the foot of the cam, throwing its face outside the frame, while the arm K at the same time throws out the bolt L, thecam and bolt setting into recesses in the sash fitted to receive them, and holding the sash tight, whether open or closed, as desired. The rubber spring E might be replaced by a spiral or other equivalent. I am aware that sash-frames have before been secured by cam-levers in connection with a spring and bolt, but I claim that my improvement is superior in point of simplicity and durability over preceding arrangements, and that the combination and arrangement of the parts are novel.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the cam-lever D, spring E, or its equivalent, lever F, arm K, bolt L, and cord G, .in the manner and for the purposes substantially as above set forth and described.
' GEORGE BROSIUS.
