Beit known that LALBERT CAMERON HUNT,

a citizen of the United States, and a resident principally of wire and connected with a` swingingv frame which holds the wires distended and which has attached to its free portion `a'device for engaging the post andr stretching the wires taut in connection therewith.

This specification is an exact description of one example of my invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar' characters of reference indicate correspondingpartsin all the views.

Figure 1 is a side view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View showing particularly the device for stretching the wires when the gate is closed, and Fig. 3 is a-sectional elevation on the line 3 3 of Fig. l.

a indicates the post on which the gate swings, and b indicates the post with which the free end of the gate'is adapted to be engaged.

f indicates a lever which is fulcrumed on` the free end of the beam c at. a point f', said lever having the running-wires e connected therewith at their outer ends.

b' indicates a keeper on the post b, adjacent to the upper end of the lever f, so as to be engaged therewith, and b2 indicates a keeper at the bottom of the post below the lower end of said lever.

Fulcrumed to the lever f at the point g near the lbottom of said lever is a lever g, which has its lower end extended below the .lines in Fig. l.

c3 indicates a keeper on the free end of the beam c to be engaged by the lever g whensaid lever is in closed position, as shown by th full lines in Fig. l. i

In order to close the gate, th'e lower end of thelever g should be engaged with thekeeper b2 and theupper end of the leverf should be engaged with the keeper b', the levers then occupying the position shown -by the dotted Then by throwing leftward the upper end of the lever g and engaging the same with the keeper c3 the wires e will be rendered taut and the two levers f and g will be held rmly engaged.v with their respective keepers b and b2. This forms a gate effectively spanning the space between the posts d and b, and said gate cannot be released until the lever g is disengaged from the keeper o3 and thrown again into the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. l. The wires e being thus slackened, the leversf and g may be entirely'disen'gaged from the keepers and the gate swung, with the beam c, to either side of the post a, thus opening the space between the posts.

Various changes in the form, proportions,

and minor details of my invention may be resorted to at will without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Hence I consider myself entitled to all such variations as may lie within the intent of my claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination with a support, of a member arranged to swing thereon, a lever fnlcrumed on said member, a iiexible connection extending between the lever and the support, a second lever fulcrumedfon the first lever, keepers mounted independently of the said swinging member and adapted to be engaged respectively by the levers, and an additional keeper on the swinging member and adapted to be engaged by the second-named lever.

2. In a gate, the combination of a stationary IOO support, a member mounted to swing thereon and extending outward therefrom, a lever fulorumed on the said member, flexible connections between the lever and said support, a keeper removably engaged by the lever, a second lever fnlorumed on the rst lever, a keeper adapted to be removably engaged by the second lever, and a third keeper, the said third keeper being mounted on the swinging member. and adapted to be engaged by the second lever, for the purpose specified.

3. In a gate, the combination of a stationary support, a member mounted to swing thereon and extending outward therefrom, a lever fulorumed on the said member, flexible connections between the lever and the support, a

keeper removably engaged by the lever, a second lever fulcrumed to the first-named lever, a keeper adapted to be removably engaged by the second lever, a third keeper, the third keeper being mounted on the swinging member and'adapted to be removably engaged by the second named lever, and a guide mounted on said swinging member and inclosing the free part of the second-named lever. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
