CHARLES M. HODGES, 0F vlviAlvsnntmr MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNQR To HIMSELF, WILLIAM o. GAPRON, AND NATHANIEL WHI'PMORE.
Letters Patent No. 72,638, datevd'ieccmbsr 24, 1867; antedated Jutte' 10, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN SGYTHES.
TOALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS' SHALL COME:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. HODGES, of Mansfield, in the county of' Bristol, and State of-Massa.- chnsetts, have invented a new and 'useful Improvement in Scythes; and do hereby declare the saure to be fully described in the 4following specicationand represented in theaccompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is'a side view Aof a Scythe-blade made in accordance with myinventiorr. i
Figure 2 is a back edge view of it. v
Figure 3 is a transverse section of it. p
Figure 4 is a View of the back piece as separate from blade and cap or stiifening-plate. g
In the drawings, -A denotes a thin plate of steel, of the form required for a blade. Bis' a sti'ening-plate or strip of 4metal bent transversely with the angular form, as shown in g. 3,'and laid'upon the bladeA, so as to stand at an' acute angle therewith, thevarrangenientof the blade and its stiie'ning-plate or capvbeing as represented in tliedrawings. IThe said cap-plate is to be secured to the blade by solder run into lthe angular spaceV between the two, and so as to pass between the at-surface-portionsof the two which are in contact.' The solder, however, is to extend into the angular space but a very short distance, it' any, from its vertex or thejunction of the two plates. The receiving partvof the angular space between the two plates is to receive a. back piece, C, formed as shown in figs. 3 and 4, 'such back piece being triangulartor'trapezoidal in its transversc section. 'The said back piece-projects from the heel part D of. the Scythe, or is formed of one-pice of metal with it, and may be madeof what istermed malleable cast iron. The said back piece is vto'be'fastened to the blade A and the cap, by means of screws s s going into theniI laterally. 4 I vv When the blade may become worn o'ut or rendered useless, it may be easily removed from the back piece and another blade be put in its place on such back piece. The cap-plate B, formed and applied to theblade .Av
in manner as described, operates to 'great advantagcito stifen suoli blade; and. furthermore, by forming'a,
channel for reception of the solder, it'ean be connected to the blade to muchbetter advantage thanit could be were it a dat plate instead of being made or bent in the angular form, as'exhibited.
I make no claim to' a scythe as made withza grooved back and a blade to enter the groove of'lsu'ch back'.V What I claimas my invention, isn I v The combination as well as the arrangement of the baclg piece C with the blade A and the-cap-peceB, arranged and applied with respect to each other as set forth. l
' CHARLES vM. HODGES.
