Description

PATENTED APR. 21, 190s. M. GLBAVBR. i:
U1/wem To@ KOM @Hoz A HQRSE BLANKET. APPLICATION FILED NOV. 6, 1901.
PATENT OFFICE.
MAMIE CLEAVER, OF LEBANON, KENTUCKY.
HoRsE-BLANKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 725,931, dated April 21, 1903.
Application ined Novembr, m01. serm'nofsiags. (remodel.)
To all whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, MAMIE CLEAVER,of Lebanon, in the county of Marion and State of,V Kentucky, have in vented certain new andv use-1 ful Improvements in Horse-Blankets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain newy and useful improvements in horse-blankets; and it has for its object to provide suitable means for taking up the strain in the wearofthe blanket, whereby itsv durability is greatly increased. l i
A further object is to provide simple and efficient means for securing the blanket vin position upon the animal; and a further object is to provide ample protection for'the animals breast.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawingalfigures 1 and 2 are opposite side views of my improved blanket. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional viewv illustrating the frontdfiap. Fig. 4' is ya sec'` tional view on the line 4 4, Fig. 2, illustrating the position assumed by the blanket while being worn. Fig. 5 is a detail view illustrating the crossed securing-straps. f
Referring to the drawings, 10 designates the body of the blanket, the same being provided with a suitable lining 11. Said body is cut out upon a curved line at 12 t'ofpass around the animals neck, the fabric forming said body being turned back along said'curved line to form a reinforced portion 13, which may or may not extend to the lower edge of the blanket. Said body is also curved or rounded at 14 to fit over the animals hips. The forward end of said body is provided with iiaps 15, which fit one over the other, whereby the animals breast is completely'v protected from cold and exposure.
On each side of the blanket, n ear its lower edge and extending approximately parallel with the latter, is a strap 16, which is securely fastened to the body of the blanket by stitches or other suitable means, the forward ends of said straps being extended beyond the flaps 15 and providedwith buckles, snap-hooks, or
other preferred fastening means. A strap 17 extends downwardly on both sides of the body 10 in a diagonal direction from the shoulder- 4line to the front of the blanket, said strap be- .ing secured to said body preferably by stitching and provided with free ends 18, which are 'designed to be connected by buckles, snap- -hooks, or the like.A
The straps 16 and 17, with their fastening means, serve to hold the flaps 15 in their proper relation to each other.
On each side of the body 10 and extending from the top toward the lower edge of the The straps 16 also serve to more securely fasten the straps 19 2O to the blanket at the points vwhere they cross. On one side of the blanket .the ends 21 of the straps 19.20 are of sufficient length to pass beneath Ythe body of the animal. These ends 21 lare provided with :suitable fastening devices 22, which are dei'si'gned' to engage with corresponding devices 23, carried by theopposite ends 24 of straps Y'19 20, said extended portions 21 being crossed at 25, as shown, whereby when they are se- `cured-in position the strap- 20 on one side of the blanket becomes a substantial. continuation ofthe strap 19 on the other sidethereof. By this. means they-lower edges ofthe blanket are securely fastened one over the other, thus fully protecting the animal and securing the blanket'rmly in position.
The advantages of my improved blanket will be 'at once apparent to those skilled in the art to which it appertains. It will be particularly noted that strap 17 holds the blanket up on the animals Withers and, together with the reinforced portion, greatly relieves the strain upon the straps 16, which latter are de- IOO the Withers and to prevent strain upon the body of the blanket under the circumstances above set forth. Said straps 16 and 17 also serve to hold the front flaps 15 in proper position. It will also be observed that by securing the straps 17 and 19 at the same point over the animals shoulder and converging the straps 19 20 and crossing them under the animals belly the blanket will be more securely held in position and the entire strain will come upon the straps instead of upon the blanket, as would be the case were the straps parallel. Forinstance, any strain upon strap 20 on eithersde of the blanket will be brought to bear upon the strap 19 on the other side of the blanket through the medium of the crossed strap 21. The strain thus brought about will be taken up by the straps 16 17 and the reinforced portion, so that the fabric will not be torn or drawn out of shape and at the same time the blanket will not shift, but will be held securely in place. It will also be observed that while I have described my improved blanket as designed particularly for horses, yet the same can with but slight modicatiou be used for other animals without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim as my invention- 1. A blanket comprisingabody portion, and converging hip and shoulder straps secured to both sides of said body portion and extending downwardly from the hip and shoulder lines, respectively, the hip and should erstraps on one side of said blanketlha'ving relatively long free ends arranged to be crossed beneath the animal for direct engagement with the shoulder and hip straps, respectively, onthe other side of said body portion, whereby the hi p-strap on one side becomes, in effect, a continuation of the shoulder-strap on the other side, as set forth.
2. Ablanket comprisingabody portion, con verging hip and shoulder straps secured to both sides of said body portion and extending downwardly from the hip and shoulder lines, respectively, the hip and shoulder straps on one side of said blanket having relatively long free ends arranged t0 be crossed beneath the animal for direct engagement with the shoulder and hip straps, respectively, on the other side of said body portion, whereby the hip-strap on one side becomes, in e1fect,a continuation of the shoulder-strap on the other side, and forwardly-extended neck-straps secured to said body at the same point as said shoulder straps and leading downwardly therefrom, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
