To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CARLTON J ULI s KUSOHE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oshkosh, in the county of \Vin-v nebago and State of WVisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Shade-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to a device for holding a shade in front of a lamp, gas-light, or any otherlighting appliance; and it comprises a certain specially-formed gripper for engaging the lamp, said gripper-carrying an ad: justable arm, which in turn supports the frame or holder for the shade. This shade may consist of a piece of cardboard or of any other material having any desired degree of opacity. The shade may be either plain or ornamented, as will be readily understood, and owing to the construction provided the shade maybe constructed to occupy exactly the desired position. v

This specification is an exact description of several forms of the invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the invention in use on a student-lamp. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the holder. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the holder folded. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary plan view of a modification of the device, and Fig. 5 illustrates a further modification.

Referring to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the main arm a of the device is formed, preferably, of a flat metal strip twisted in the manner shown to give it the necessary degree of'rigidity. On the inner end of this main arm is mounted by a pivot b the socket-arm b. said socketarm being formed of sheet metal, at the outer end of which is a flap 19 which is bent up parallel with the main portion of the arm, as shown best in Fig.2, thus forming two cheeks between which the inner end of the arma is located, and through these cheeks the pivot b is passed. At its outer end the arm a carries the holder proper, which is pivoted thereto by means of a pivot d and which comprises a horizontal part d, with springfingers d projecting upward therefrom, these fingers being adapted to have the shade proper (indicated at e in Fig. 2) introduced between them.

In the use of the invention the parts are adjusted to the lamp, as shown, and the shade may then be held in any desired position. Shades of any sort maybe employed, as will be apparent, and these may be ornamented or not, as desired. When the device is to be transported or when it is not in use, it may be folded in the manner indicated in Fig. 3, in which position the device occupies a'very compact form and may be readily mailed,

which is a decided advantage in thatit greatly facilitates the sale of the article.

As shown in Fig.4, the device may be formed at each side of the bottom portion d of the shade-holder proper with tubular sockets g, these sockets being adapted removably to receive horizontally-disposed rods h, projecting from opposite sides of the shade-holder and carrying shade-holders i of similar construction and function as the-shade-holders before described. This enables three separate shades to be supported on the one arm h, and since each of the shade-holders 2' is pivotally mounted on the arm 72, all of the shades maybe adjusted to the desired position independently of one another.

Various other changes in the form, proportions,and minor details of the invention may be resorted to at will without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Hence I consider myself entitled to all such variations as may lie Within the intent of my claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters latent- 1. Phe combination of a main arm, means for mounting the same on a support, a shadeholder proper carried by the main arm and having a socket therein, an arm adapted to be received in said socket, and a second shadeholder proper carried by the arm.

2. The combination of a main arm, means for mounting the same on a support, a shadeholder proper carried on the main arm and having two sockets, rods fitted in said sockets and projected oppositely from the shadeholder, and additional shade-holders carried by said rods.

3. A shade-holder, comprising a main arm, a shade-holder proper carried at the outer end thereof, a second or socket arm having at its outer end a flap bent alongside the main portion of the arm, the inner end of the mainarm being received between said flap and the main portion of the socket-arm and pivoted thereto for the purpose specified, the said socket-arm having at its remaining or inner end a longitudinally-openiniz socket, and means for engaging the shade-holder with a support, said means including a shank removably fitted in the said socket.
