NITED HUGH o. sAMMoNs,
or CANTON, orno.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 724,617, dated April 7, 1903.
Application filed January 22, 1903.
To all whom it may concern: 7
. Be it known that I, HUGH Gr. SAMMONS, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Oanton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section in perspective. Fig. 2 is a top view showing the false bottom removed. Fig. 3 is a view showing the bottom of the front or forward end of the toy.
The presentinvention has relation to toys; and it consists in the novel arrangement hereinafter described.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding partsin all the figures of the drawlugs.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 represents a vehicle-body, which is preferably mounted upon three wheels, two of which are located at the rear end of the body and one at the forward end thereof.
To the top or upper side of the bottom 2, forming a part of the vehicle-body l, is securely attached the spring 3, which spring is formed of any desired length and is provided with any desired number of con volutions, the convolntions spaced from each other, as illustrated in Fig. 2. p
The spring 3 is formed of such material that a gong will be produced. Above the spring-gong 3 is located the false bottom 4:, said false bottom being so located that a chamber will be provided for the spring-gong. 3, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
To the front or forward'end of the vehiclebody is connected the tongue 5, and for the purpose of the tongue-section 6 being folded or turned back out of the way said section is hinged to the tongue 5 in any convenient and well-known manner.
The front or forward wheel 7 is mounted upon the bar 8, which bar is attached to the bottom or under side of the body-bottom 2 by Serial No. 140,083. (No model.)
means of suitable staples 9 or their equivalents.
The rear bar 10 is attached in substantially the same manner as the forward bar and has mounted thereon the rear wheels 11.
It will be understood that as the vehicle or toy is moved over the floor or other surface vibrations will be given to the spring 3 and a musical sound produced.
For the purpose of increasing the vibration of the difierent convolutions of the spring 3 the spring-bars 12 are provided, which bars are fixed at one end and at their free ends provided with hammers 13, which hammers are so located that as the spring-arms 12 vibrate they will strike the proper convolution ofthe spring 3,"and thereby increase the vibrationsof the convolutions and at the same time 7 increase the musical sound of said spring. p I
It will be understood that in order to hold the spring-arms 12 so that the hammers 13 will be out of normal contact with the spring 3 the arms should be inclined upward from their connected ends toward their free ends, and-in order to give the proper vibration to the arms 12 the blocks or supports 14 are provided, which blocks or supports are located intermediate the hammers l3 and the fixed end ofthe arms 12.
It will be understood that by providing the false bottom I am enabled to provide atoy vehicle capable of holding any desired articles without interfering with the springchainber. I have illustrated the ends of the vehicle-body l inclined toward each other at their bottom or lower ends; but this construction is not important, as the only object is'to provide a chamber at the bottom of the body, within which chamber is located the spring and the spring-arm's.
' For the purpose of allowing soundyproduced by the vibration of the. spring 3 the bottom 2 should be provided with any desired number of apertures, such as 15.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a toy the combination of a body mounted In testimony that I claim the above I have upon wheels, said body provided with a chamhereunto subscribed my name in the pres- 10 her in its lower portion, a spring-gong located ence of two witnesses. in the chamber, spring-arms provided with p t 5 hammers upon their free ends and said ham- HUGH SAMMONS mers normally located out of contact with the Witnesses: convolutions of the spring-gong, snbstan J. A. JEFFERS, tially as and for the purpose specified. F. W. BOND.
