CART-TOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.499,963, dated June 20, 1893.
Application filed fieptember 19, 1892. Serial No. 446,319. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that'I, HARMAN BUNKER, of the town of Barrie, in the county of Simcoe, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a certain new and Improved Cart-Top, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a cheaply constructed top-specially applicable to village carts, but capable of being applied to all classes of vehicles, and it consists, essentially, of two bars or posts detachably connected to the vehicle, each having a T-head from which is suspended two bars, the inner ends of which are joined together by a pin arranged to move in a vertical slot made in the post, the pin-which connects the bar to theT-head being carried through a slot made in the bar, the whole being otherwise arranged substantially as hereinafter more particularly explained and then definitely claimed.
The drawing is a perspective view showing my improved top applied to a village cart.
A, represents a post or bar pivoted on the upright B, which is fixed to the body of the cart, as shown. The bolt 0, on which the post A, is pivoted, is provided with a suitable nut so that the post may be readily held at any desired angle.
D, is a T-head fixed to the top of the post A. A pair of bars E, are connected together by a bolt F, provided with a suitable nut, which bolt fits into a slot G, made in the post A, as indicated. A slot H, is made in each bar E, from which abolt I, projects and which bolt fits into a hole made in the T'head D,as indicated. The top or shade proper is supported by a pair of posts A, provided with the parts described and locatedopposite to each other on the body of the cart, each pair of bars E, be-
ing connected together bya cross-rod J. By drawing down the bolt F, which connects the inside ends of the bars E, the outside ends of the bars E, are brought together by moving on their respective pivots or bolts I, which motion is permitted by the slot H, the slot G, permitting the movement of the bolt F. By loosening and tightening the bolt 0, the post A, on each side of the vehicle can be adjusted and held at any desired angle to provide the =necessary shade, and the top may be collapsed as described, and thrown back out of the Way.
Inthe drawing, only a portion of the covering material K, is shown, the bars of one side being left bare.
-I do not confine myself to any particular kind of material or to the style or shape of the parts, as the design may be considerably altered without affecting the principle of my invention.
A cover of this description is very cheap in construction, may be applied without any trouble to almost any kind of vehicle and is readily adjusted.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is In a vehicle top or shade, a pair of posts A having T-heads,a pair of bars E for each post connected to the ends of said T-heads, and the ends of said bars pivoted together and connected to said posts and supported so as to admit of adjustment, substantially as described.
