Description

(No Model.)
J. MOG'INIS.
TONGUE SUPPORT FOR'VEHIOLES.
No. 492,822. Patentd Mar. 7, 1893' UNITED STATES ATENT' OFFICE.
JOHNSON MGGINIS, OF EMLENTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
TONGUE-SUPPORT FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 492,822, dated March '7, 1893.
Application filed January 31, 1891. Serial No. 379,799. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHNSON MoGINIs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Emlenton, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Tongue Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in vehicle tongue supports, and the leading object of my invention is the provision of a device which will possess merit in points of simplicity and durability and which can be produced at a comparatively low figure.
A further object of my invention is theprovision of a tongue support which in addition to possessing the features of merit before named will take the weight entirely from the necks of the animal or animals and which will have means for adjusting the tension of the spring supports.
To attain these objects and such others as pertain to an invention of this character the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations substantially as herein illustrated, described, and specifically defined and distinguished by the claim. Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a tongue support constructed in accordance with and embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section thereof.
Referring by letter to the drawingsA designates the axle of a vehicle, B the bolster thereof and O the bounds secured between the bolster and axle. The tongue D is provided with the reach bars E connected by the cross-bar F and are pivoted at Gbetween the hounds. To the underside of the axle I attach plates H provided with hooks or eyes H and to the reach-bars I attach bars or plates J having openings J in the outer ends thereof. The hooks of the plates H and the openings of the plates J are substantially in aline and spiral springs K have their lower ends connected to the hooks I-I and their upper ends connected to the adjusting bolts or screws I. secured in the openings J" of the plates J. From this construction it will be seen that the tongue is supported by the spring connections but allows the proper movement of the tongue, and it will also be seen that the tension of the spring can be adjusted and the wear on the springs taken up as desired. It will also be noted that I employ an ordinary coil spring the ends of which are properly connected and this makes the device very cheap and the springs can be readily replaced.
It will be seen that I provide a simple, cheap, and efficient device of this character which can be easily applied to a vehicle tongue without marring the appearance thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a tongue formed with reach bars at the rear portion thereof at the outer and central portions of the same, whose rear ends are connected by a cross bar, an axle beam having hounds projecting therefrom, the outer reach bars of the tongue being pivotally attached to said hounds, plates secured to the under side of the axle. beam projecting forward and. formed with eyes, elongated plates or bars attached to the upper portions of the outer reach bars and having rear upturned ends with openings therein, adjusting bolts or screws mounted in said rear upturned ends of the plates, bars secured to the reach bars, and springs attached to the lower portion of said adjusting bolts or screws and to the eyes of the plates projecting forward from the axle beam, the said springs being located in line with the ends of each of the outer reach bars of the tongue and of singlespiral form, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
, JOHNSON MoGINIS. Witnesses:
O. P. GRUNDEN, E. O. MORRISON.
