I. N. FANEBUST.
TWO WHEELED VEHICLE.
No. 356,110. Patented Jan. 18, 1887.
STATES TWO=WHEELED VEHICLE.
r'BPECIIE'ICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 3 6,11 dated n ary 1887- Applicati on filed October 16, 1886. Serial No. 216,403.
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVER NELSON Fann- BUs'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lee, in the county of Lee and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sulkies; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The object of the presentinvention is to improvethe' construction of two-wheeled carts or sulkies by which the so-called horse-motion in this class of vehicles is greatly lessened, thereby making an easier riding vehicle, with less rack or jar and consequent wear upon the wheels; and it consistsin the details of construction substantially as shownin the drawing, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which represents a perspective View of my invention, A designates the shafts of the vehicle bent down at their rear end, as shown at (1., and to the extremities of which is attached by clips I), or in any other preferred manner, the axle B,' which is braced by stayrods 0, connected thereto and to the bent ends of the shafts.
The seat C, at its front end, has the usual frame, D, common to this class of vehicles, and is connected at its forward end to the crossbar I) of the shafts by means of a spiral or other form of spring, e, and the sides of the frame are connected to the bent portions a of the shafts by means of springs f and equalizing-links g. The back ofthe seat C has depending rods h and transverse rod 'i, which together form a frame for the rear end of the seat; and, if preferred, said frame may be formed of a continuous bar or rod, as found most convenient. This frame, at the rear end of the seat, is connected to extensions E of the shafts A by means of springs Jr, said springs at their upper ends being attached to clips F, which extend over the ends of the extensions E, and are adjustable thereon and held in their adjusted position by means of set-screws Z. It
(No model.) I a will be seen by this construction that the seat, instead of resting upon the springs as heretofore, is suspended between the extension of the shafts, thereby giving it a much easier movement, and the vehicle may be readily balanced by the adjustment of the clips F and the extensions E of the shafts.
It is evident that any desirable number ofsprings may be used to hold the front end of the frame D to the shafts and cross-bar thereof, and the manner of suspending the seat by means of the springs, as heretofore described, the jar of the wheels will not immediately affect the person riding or the horse pulling the sulky. A sidewise motion to the seat is also obtained, so that if one of the wheels strikes a rut in the track or ona rough road it will prevent the wheel from breaking, because the stroke will lose most of its power before it reaches the spokes. The springs can be increased or diminished in number as the load requires. It will be noticed that the upper ends of the springsf engage with brackets 'm, secured to the under side of the bent portions to of the shafts, and have a series of seats for the hooked end of the springs, so its tension may be changed by moving it longitudinally with the shafts.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a vehicle, the combination, with a seat thereof provided with a frame at its front and at its rear end, of suitable springs connecting the front frame to the shafts and cross-bar thereof, clips adjustably connected to the ex tension of the shafts, and springs secured to the clips and to the frame at the rear of the seat, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
IVER. NELSON FANEBUST.
Witnesses:
