Description
Y getint .ANDREW GILMORE, OF EHIJNIXVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
i Lettera .Patent No. 72,386, dated December 17, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOlIGHS.
titte Stimuli etant tu in tigen ttttens man init mating mi at its time.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, ANDREW GILMORE, of Phnxville, in the county of Chester, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Plough; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in whichj l I Figure 1-is la side elevation of my invention, a portion of the mould-board being` broken away to-show the construction of all the parts.
Figure 2 is a top view of the same; and
Figure 3 is a detached view of the cleaner.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The invention .is limited to a new and improved device for preventing the coulter from clogging, and in connection with this an adjustable handle.
In the drawings, A represents the beam, B the mould-board, C the coulter, and D the handle of a-plough. ofthe usual form. The handle is made in two parts, one terminating in a loop oihslotted head, d, and the other overlapping it at the head d, and provided with a set-screw, e, which projects through the slot c of the head. The lower end of the upper portion of the handle is pivoted to the other portion directly below the slotted head d. The position of the upper portion of the handle may be changed at pleasure to adjust the handle to the use ol' persons of dilerent heights, or by removing the set-screw e the top of the handle may be turned down upon the plough, so that the implement will'occupy but little space. Inside of the plough, between the mould-board and land-side, is a roller or wheel, W, which is rotated by the motion of the plough in the furrow. The wheel bears in a frame, F; that slides up and down, and is adjusted in elevationv by means of a slot, z, and set-screw, a". The axle of the wheel W also carries an eccentric, G, which works on an arm, E, lever H, pitrnan I, and Va cleaning-blade, J, pivoted to the beam on the right side, and working np und down on the left side of the coulter, in contact with it, so as t'o'remove all clogs of grass, sticks, sods, lite., that may collect under the beam. The cleaning-blade J is a curved blade, Yof the form shown in iig. 3, composed of two parts, jj', connected at their ends by a slot, r, and set-screw, r', in such a manner that the length of the cleaner can be adjusted to suit the necessities of the case. The pitman I has several holcsa a, and pins in connection with them, to render it adjustable in length. As the wheel W revolves, the upper end of the cleaner is moved back and forth, causing that part of the blade below the pivot to vibrate upland downv alongside ot the coulter and in contact with it, as above described, thereby removing all obstructions from the coulter.
I am aware thata device very similar in general principles to this has been used, in which the cleaninginstrument moves back and forth on the right-hand side of the conlter. Such an instrument will not, however, work well in practice. The sod on that side is connected with the ground and interferes with the movement of the instrument materially. It should he situated on the land-sident` the plogh, where the soil `is severed and forced apart, leaving a space for the better operation of' the device. I have practically tested both methods, and am prepared to say that the advantage of my arrangement over the one referred to is very considerable. There is an advantage also in employing the eccentric G instead of a crank or cam-motion. It works more evenly and requires less power to operate'it. j
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The cleaning-blade J, when constructed of tno picces,jj, attached together in such a manner as to render the blade adjustable in length.
2. rlhe adjustable frame F, in combination with the wheel W and eccentric G, when Aused in connection I 'with a plough, substantially in the manner and for the purposes specified.
3. The combination of the adjustable frame F, wheel W, eccentric G, arm E, lever H, pitman I, and
pivoted cleaning-blade J', when the latter is arranged to work on the left side of the coulter C, substantially as and for the-purpose specified. l y
4. The adjustable handles D D, whennsed `in connection with a plough, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
ANDREW GILMORE.
