TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, CHARLES WHITE, of Bladensburg, in the county of Prince George, and State of Mary*- land, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ploughs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear', and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a plough embracing my improvements.

My invention consists, first, in a novel arrangement of devices for effecting the double adjustment, that is to say, the vertical and horizontal or lateral adjustment of the plough-beam relative to the plough; second, in the manner of pivoting the beam through a forked pivotal standard, or its equivalent, mounted in a horizontal lug o'r {langeof the mould-board; third, in a novel form or construction of the plough-beam; fourth, 'in the 4employment of aL yielding tension Vor, draughtvrod passing lengthwise centrally through the beam; and fifth,-
in the employment of a spring, in combination lwith the draught-rod, whereby the latter is made to yield and relieve the strain upon the team and plough in case the 4latter strikes an obstruction, as hereinafter explained.
To enable others to understand and use my inventinI'will proceed to describe the same with reference to i the drawings, in which A represents the mould-board, B the point, C the land-side, andl) the handles, which parts are combined iu the usual manner, and each of which may be of any usual or desired construction, except that the mould-board, or, if preferred, the land-side, is extended upward, and is provided with a horizontal flange or lug, a, which Vis perforated to receive and form a bearing for the pivotal support of the plough-beam. E is the beam, which is cast or otherwise formed in one piece, and is provided upon its opposite sides with semi-cylindrical ribs or corrugations running lengthwise of the beam, 'and arranged or located alternately upon opposite sides thereof, in themanner represented in the drawing. The beam E is mounted `in an upright standard or pivotal support, G, which has its bearings inv the luga of the mould-board, and which `may be forked to receive the beam, as represented in figs. 1 and 2, or squared and passing through a. slot or perforation in the beam, as shown in'ig. 3. In this latter construction the slot or perforation in the beam should be enlarged or elongated at the top, to admit of the vertical adjustment of the beain hereinafter provided,for. The manner of effecting the adjustment of the beam and plough so as to cause the latter to take more or less land, and for varyingthe depth ofthe furrow, will be understood without further description. The draught of the'team, instead of beingappled directly to the forward end of the beam, in the usual manner, is applied tothe forward end ot' the tension or draught-rod F, at F, an'd said rod, through its spring-connection with the beam, in the manner explained, allows the plough to yield in the event of its strikingr a large stone or other obstruction, thereby obviating, to a vgreat extent, the strain upon the team, and the danger of breaking the plough-point consequent upon the striking of such obstruction by plouglis constructed in the usuel manner. Having new described my invention, what I claim asnew, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is 1. The angle-iron I, in combination with the slotted transverse bar J', and the rear end of the plough-beam,
