IMPROVEMENT IN TEMPLES USED IN WEAVING DOUBLE CLOTH.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 71,237, dated April 2, 1850.

Y Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Loom-Temples and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and

exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in Which- I Figure 1 is an elevation, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal plan, of the temple, showing also its position relative tothe cloth and breast-beam of thev loom. I

This temple i's to be applied exclusively to the weaving of seamless fabrics, by which is meant those fabrics in which two webs are joined together at the selvage by a peculiar manner of Weaving, thc object and design of the temple being to keep the two selvages parallel with each other, and at the same time to give to the cloth such a degree of tension as may be desirable.

Two bars or rods A B are jointed near the middle at C in such a manner as to alloT the rods when connected witheach other to be lengthened or shortened at pleasure in order. to adapt the temple to the required width of the cloth. At each end of the combined rods one or more small Wheels or pulleys D D are attached in such a manner as to allow them to be turned by the contact of their periphi erics with the cloth at J. Withinashort distance of each end of the bar or rod a wire E E is fastened, having about two inches of its opposite end bent at an angle at the point F. This end of the Wire drops into a slot II Within orin front of thebreast-beam P. Bymeans of this slot and Wires the temple is held in its place, and by changing the length of the Wires it may be retained at any required distance from the breast-beam. 1

The temple is not in sight when the loom is in operation, beinginclosed between the lower and the upper Webs. The lower web as it passes through vthe slot I-I is under the wire E, and theupper web is above it.

I do not claim the jointed bars or rods; but

XVhat I claim as myy invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The combination of the jointed rods with the wheels or pulleys at the ends of the rods.

2. The Wires fastened at one end to the bars or rods and having the other end bent at such an angle as to enter a slot in or upon the breast-beam for the purpose ot' retaining the temple in a proper position.

3. The slot in or upon the breast-beam when the same is used in connection Withthe temple, as herein described.
