Be it known that I, JOEL M. WHEELER, of Oxford, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cleaning Boiler-Flues, die.; andl do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and us'e the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a. longitudinal central section of one form of, the instrument for applying my invention, taken through the line x zf, iig. 2.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved means for cleaning the tubes, fines, tube-boxes, dac., of steam-boilers easily, conveniently, and thoroughly, which may be applied'withou't hauling the fires, or while the ship is under way, and which cannot injure the flues or cause them to leak; and it consists in the construed tion of a device having angular jets for thc passage of steam, and in the means by which saidjets are rendered available.

This improvement was originally devised for removing'the ashes, dre., and cleaning out the spaces between the tubes in boilers, and is equally applicable to vertical or horizontal boilers.

VA, B, and C are heads, which are designed to introduce the angular steam-jets int'o the spaces tobe cleaned. The head A, which is designed more particularly-to be used-in cleaning the spaces between the tubes of vertical boilers, is made in three pieces, a1 ai a, which are secured to each other by screws passing through the part or piece a3, and through lugs, a, cast upon the inner surfaces of the parts a'l audaz, as shown in the drawings. All around the en d piece a3 is formed a narrow space or opening, incliuing outward, through which thejet of steam escapes in thin sheets, so as to have a rectangular form in its cross-section, this form of thejet enabling the steam to act upon the forward sides of the tubes, Awhere brushes could not reach, and the tendency being to concentrate the ashes and drive them, through the space through which the head A is being passed, into the hack connection, whence they can be readily removed. Through the Amiddle of. the end piece ais formed a'. circular hole, for the passage of a jet of steam to assist .in driving the ashes through the space between the tubes into thc back connection, the end slits or spaces in the head A also enabling the steam to clean oil` the upper and lower sheets of thc tube-box. Upon the sides of the head A, between the pieces al and a2, are slots or spaces, inclining backward, as shown in ig.i7,lthroughwhich jets of steam pass in such a direction as to clean off the rear sides of the tubes, so` that the ashes may be wholly removed from the tube-box, and the tubes cleaned thoroughly upon all sides. A Y In the case of horizontal boilers, I prefer to make the head round or cylindricah'as. shown in iigs. 1, 2, 3, and 4. The head B is made in two pieces, b and b2, which are secured together. by'screws, passing through the end piece b2, and through lugs, 63, formed upon the inner surface of the part b1. lThe pieces Il and b2 are sp formed as to leave a circular slot or space all around between the parts 61 and b2, as shown in gs. 3 and 4, said space or slot inclin'ing outward, as shownin iig. 8, so as to drive the ashes from the inner surface ofthe llues, and drive them back into the rear connection. 'g'lo assist the angularjet to do this, a circularhole is formed through the centre of the piece b2, for the passage of a centraljet, as shown in gs. 3 and 4. In case the boilers are so constructed and arranged that it may be inconvenient or dithcult to getl at the'rear connection, to remove the ashes, a head, C, made as shown in i:igs. 1 and 2, maybe used. The head C is made in two'parts, c1 and c, connected to each other by a screw, passingl through the centre of the part c2, andscrewinginto the end of the part c1, as shown in fig. 1. The sides ot' the inner end of the part ci are cut away, except enoughto support the end into which the connecting-screw enters, so that the steam-may escape freely. The piece c2 is made cup or bell-shaped, as show-n in tig. 1, and has a circular slot or space formed between its edge andthe side or shoulder of the part c1, as shown in iig. 1. This slot inclines backward, as shown in fig. 1, so that the circular jet of steam may strike the sides of the flue at an ongle, as the heed C is being passed through said Hue, and drive the ashes into the font connection, wvhence they may be conveniently removed. The heads A, B, and C, have screw-threads upon the inner surface of their reef ends, so that they may be conveniently attached to a. piece of g'ns or other suitable rigid pipe, which, for convenience, should be longer than the space or tluc into which thc heed is to be passed, the rear eri/d of which pipe should bc connected with the steamspace of the boiler by a. flexible steam-pipe.
