" Y BRUSH-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 723,165, dated March 17, 1903. Application filed June 5.1902Q srit1No.110,318.' (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Belt known that I, ISRAEL L. LANDIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brush-I-Iolders, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates to brush-holders,and particularly to holders for paint, whitewash, and paste brushes of large size.
The object of my invention is to provide an easily-adjustable holder whichwill permit of almost any relative position of the brush with reference to the handle. 7
In a general way my invention consists in a rotatable member of, particular con figuration provided with means for attaching the same to the head of the brush and a handle upon which said member may be clamped in any position of rotation; and my invention further consists in the various details of construction and in combinationsof parts, all as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and
in which I Figure 1 is a side elevation of 'a brushholder embodying myinventionwith brush attached.
, same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of Fig. 1
configuration permits of the brush being completely reversed to lie parallel with the handle. This relative position of plug and disk is an important feature of my invention. The plug 4. is further provided with a preferably slightly conical bore 5. i This rotating member 2 is designed to be used in connection with a preferably wooden handle 6, which maybe of any desired length, suitably rounded Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. of theat the extremity, and in the preferred construction provided with the longitudinal slot 7. Into this slot 7 the disk 3 of the rotating member 2 is adapted to be inserted and held free to rotate therein by a rod 8, preferably of the ordinary bolt-pattern, extending through the forked members of said handle and through a central orifice of suitable size in said disk 3. The rod 8 is provided with a head 9 for engagement with one of the fiat faces of said handle at one end and is preferably threaded at the other end into a suitable thumb-nut 10, operation of which thus serves to clamp said forked members against said disk to firmly hold the same at any point against rotation. I
My holder is particularly adapted for use in connection with the ordinary large-size whitewash and paste brushes, the heads of which are provided with suitably-threaded orifices, into which the plug may be screwed in the usual manner. It will be noticed, however, that my holder is adapted to be used with ordinary paint-brushes of smaller size,
which are usually provided with a long tapering handle adapted to be inserted and slightly wedged within the conical bore 5 of the plug, the brush projecting from said plug in a direction opposite to that shown in Fig. 1. It will be noticed, furthermore, that by the use of my .holder a brush is capable of an infinite variety of positions with reference to the handle, being capable of rotation about the threaded plug or within the same, and said plug being rotatably adjustable with reference to the extremity of the handle.
I do not desire to limit myself to the use of a slotted handle, as any means for clamping my holder firmly against said handle to prevent rotation thereof may be used without departing from the spirit of my invention. I have shown in Fig. 4 a slight modification of the handle and clamping means, the former instead of being slotted being flattened at its extremity to form the face 12, against which said disk is adapted to rotate and against which it may be clampedin a similar manner by means of the thumb-nut 10 and the washer 11.
Many modifications of other minor details of my improved brush-holder will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art to which it appertains, and I therefore .do not desire to limit myself to the specific construction herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. In a brush-holder, the combination with a handle having a longitudinal slot at the extremity thereof of an adjustable, pivotaldisk provided with a screw-threaded, internal and external Wedge-plug projecting tangentially therefrom, and means for clamping said disk Within said slot for rotary adjustment with reference to said handle.
2. In a brush-holder, the combination with a handle of a disk having a substantially central pivot-hole, and an externally-threaded internal and external Wedge-plug projecting tangentially from said disk in one'direction, and a pivot clamping bolt and nut for securing said handle and disk together.
3. In a brush-holder, the combination with a handle having a longitudinal slot at the extremity thereof-of a disk having a substantially central pivot-hole and mounted for rotary adjustment Within said slot, an internal and external wedge-plug projecting tangentially from said disk in one direction, and a pivot clamping bolt and nut for securing said disk and handle together.
4. In a brush-holder, the combination with a handle having alongitudinal slot at the extrernity thereof of a substantially central pi voted rotatable disk, a double Wedge-plug projecting tangentially from said disk in one direction and adapted to Wedge and hold a brush-handle thereupon and therewithin, and a bolt-and-nutclamp extending through said handle and disk for securing the same together in a pivotally adjustable position.
In testimony of the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, this 28th day of May, 1902, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ISRAEL L. LANDIS.
