Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
. FRANZ PADBERG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HARRY A. SCHOONMAKER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMPOSITION OF MATTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Yatent N 0. 722,536, dated March 10, 1903.
Application filed January 16, 1903. Serial No. 139,350. (No specimens.)
T0 at whont it may concern: 4
Be it known that I, FRANZ PADBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Composition of Matter, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My new and useful composition of matter is intended for use in connection with coal or other solid-fuel substances to prevent rapid combustion thereof; also, the formation of ashes and to secure a higher degree of heat; and it consists of the following ingredients, combined into proportion specified-namely, viz: alum, one part; common soda, two parts; oil, one-half pint; water, six parts.
In practice the alum, soda, and oil are mingled in any desired manner, and the water in a heated condition, preferably boiling, is then mixed therewith and the product is thoroughly stirred, so as to completely dissolve the alum and soda and form a solution. This solution when cooled may be stored in bottles, cans, kegs, or other receptacles, and in the use thereof it is sprinkled on the coal or other solid fuel substance in a furnace or other heater. The placing or sprinkling of the solution on or over the coal or other solidfuel substance may be done in any desired manner, and the said solution serves to prevent a too-rapid combustion of the coal or other fuel substance and also to a consider-' able extent to prevent the formation of ashes and also produces a higher degree of heat than would be produced it said solution were not employed. The saving of the coal or other solid-fuel substance when this solution is employedis from twenty to thirty per cent., and there is also a saving, as will be understood, in labor and time, as the necessity of frequent firing is avoided to an extent and the use of coal and other solid-fuel substance is rendered more cleanly.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The herein-described composition of matter, consisting of alum, soda, oil and water, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. The herein-described composition of matter for use in connection with coal and other solid-fuel substance, consisting of alum one part, soda two parts, water six parts and oil one-half pint, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 15th day of January, 1903.
FRANZ PADBERG.
