SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,194, dated March 3, 1903. Application filed August 11,1902. Serial No. 119,272. i (No model.)
fb au 107mm, it may concern: engage with the operating-shoulder 8 on the Be it known that I, IVAN VIDE, a citizen of bolt 4 when said lockebarrel is rotated. A the United States, residing at Chicago, in the guard-plate is provided with a stem 16, county of Cook and State of Illinois, have inwhich stem is adapted to extend into the 5 vented certain new and useful Improvements outer portion of the key-slot 13 in the lock- 55 in Locks, of which the following is a specilicabarrel 11 and be held therein in any suitable tion. manner, as by the screw 17. The stem of One of the objects of this invention is the said guard-plate is provided with the grooves production of a lock combining simplicityrof 18, extending therethrough, each of which :o construction with a high degree of efficiency. grooves is adapted to receive a tumbler 19, 6o
Afurther objectof theinvention is to make which tumblers are headed on their inner a lock readily alterable when itis desirable to ends to hold them from displacement. The
change the form of the key. outer edge of said guard-plate is notched to In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is form the fingers 20, the outer ends of which t5 a longitudinal sectional View of my improved fingers overhang,r at one side. 65
lock, taken on dotted line 1 1 of Fig. 4. Fig. Forward of the lock-barrel and within the 2 is a sectional View taken on the same plane case 1 I support the bracket 21, providing as the last preceding figure, but showing the bearings for the square sliding keeper-rods parts in positions different therefrom. Fig. 22, each of which rods bear at its outer end zo 3. is a transverse sectional view taken on dotand fixed rigidly thereon one of the keepers 7o ted line 3 3 of Fig. 1, but with the key re- 23. Between the sides of the bracket 21 the moved and the front plate supplied. Fig. 4 keeper-rods support coil-springs 24, held beis atransverse sectional View taken on dotted tween the forward sides of said bracket and line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a side elevation a pin 25, extending through a suitable openof the guard-plate of this lock. Fig. 6 is a ing in each of said rods, the tendency of said 75 similar view of the tumbler-barrel. springs being to normally hold the keepers In the construction of a lock embodying the in a forward position.. One side of each of features of my invention I provide a case 1, the keepers is provided with anotch 26 to rehaving the front plate 2, adapted to be seceive the sidewise-projecting forward end of 3o cured to said case in any suitable manner. one of the fingers 2O of the guard-plate. The 8o The case is provided with a suitable opening forward edge of each keeper is cut away to 3 near the lower part of its forward end for form an inclined surface 27'for the impiugethe reception of a slidable bolt 4, which bolt ment of the ends of the tumblers. The inner is thrown into and normally heldin a locked ends of the tumblers are adapted to lie each position by means of the spring 5, located bewithin its notch in the key, and Vwhen said 85 tween the rear end of said bolt and thel rear key, and with it the lock-barrel, is rotated the end of the case 1 and mounted upon the stud outer ends of the tumblers are brought into 6, formed integral with the case 1. The bolt engagement with the inclined surface 27 of 4 is provided with a stop-shoulder? for limitthe keepers, pushing said keepers backward 4o ing its forward movement and with au operagainst the action of the coil-springs 24, sur- 9o ating-shoulder 8. Y rounding the rods 23. The rotation of the The case 1 and its front plate 2 are provided lock-loarrel moves the fingers 2O of the guardwith coincident openings 9 and 10 for receivplate downward into coincidence with the ing the lock-barrel 1l, the trunnions 12 of notches 26 in the sides of said keepers. The which are rotatably supported within said stud 14 of the lock-barrel engages the oper- 95 openings 9 and 10. The lock-barrel 11 is proating-shoulder 8 of the bolt 4 and draws said vided with a longitudinal key-slot 13, eXtendbolt backward into the lock-case. Each of ing from end to end of said barrel and openthe tumblers is of a suitable length to push ing at one side thereof. Near one end said backward its coinciding keeper the proper barrel is provided witha stud 14, adapted to distance to permit the passage of the lingers roo 20 of the guard-plate l5 through the notches 26 of the keeper. If the Wrong key is inserted into the key-slot of the lock-barrel, one or more of the tumblers Will project from said barrel too far or not far enough, depending upon the form of the key, to properly push back one or more ot' said keepers, and as a result the fingers 2O of the guard-plate l5 will impinge upon the tops of said "keepers, and thus prevent the rotation of the lock-barrel.
In changing the lock to adaptit to a diierent'form of key the lock-barrel is removed from the case 1, the guard-plate l5 taken from the barrel, and the tumblers replaced by new tumblers of a maximum length. With the heads of the tumblers resting in their proper notches in the new key the outer ends of said tumblers are cut or filed away until they lie in the same plane and extend outward from the lock-barrel a proper distance. The lock-barrel is then replaced and the lock is again ready for use. To Withdraw the key, the tumblers must be turned downward, so that their heads will fallout of the way of the shoulders formed by the notches in said key.
This form ofA lock is particularly adapted for use in safety-deposit vaults and other lock-boxes Where it is desirable to hold the key in the lock until the bolt is thrown for- Wardthat is to say, to make it impossible to remove the key While the closure that the lock guards is unlocked. The bolt may be retained in its retracted position by a suitable catch if it is desirable to operate the lock in this manner.
It is apparent that various changes might be resorted to in the general form and arrangement of the several parts herein described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, wherefore I Wish to have it understood that I do not desire to limit myself to the precise details set forth.
I claim as my inventionl. In a lock, in combination, a lock-barrel; tumblers for said barrel; an individual keeper for each of said tumblers; a guard-plate adapted to engage said keepers; and a bolt.
2. In a lock, in combination, a lock-barrel; tumblers for said barrel; an individual keeper for each of said tumblers; a guard-plate having grooves for receiving said tumblers and adapted to engage said keepers; and a bolt.
3. In a lock, in combination, a lock-barrel slotted longitudinally; tumblers adapted to lie in said slot; keepers for said tumblers adapted to lie in the path of movement of said tumblers; a guard-plate having grooves adapted to receive said tumblers and extending into the slot in the leek-barrel and rotatable with said barrel; and a bolt.
4. In a lock, in combination, a lock-barrel slotted longitudinally; tumblers adapted to lie in said slot; keepers yieldingly mounted, adapted to lie in the path of movement of said tumblers and be engaged by said tumblers; a guard-plate rotatable with said barrel and having ngers adapted to pass beside said keepers; and a bolt.
5. In a lock, in combination, a lock-barrel slotted longitudinally; tumblers adapted to lie in said slot; keepers for said tumblers, which keepers are yieldingly supported With reference to said lock-barrel and are adapted to lie in the path of movement of said tumblers; a guard-plate rotatable with said barrel, said guard-plate having fingers at one side and at its other side being adapted to extend into the slot in said lock-barrel; and a bolt.
