To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN F. MOPHERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Butler, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brushes for Cleaning Type, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a brush for cleaning the type of type-writing machines; and the primary object of the same is to provide a simple and effective device of this class which can be conveniently used for cleaning type-writing-machine type without soiling the fingers of the operator by avoiding the necessity of the latter to hold the type while being cleaned.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view through a brush embodying the features of the invention and showing the spring-operating drum or cylinder in elevation. Fig. 2 is a section through the improved brush, including the spring-operating drum or cylinder. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on the line 2 2, Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
The numeral 1 designates a hollow head from which projects a tubular handle 2, the said head being suitably shaped to contain the operating parts, which will be presently set forth. At an intermediate point the head 1 is formed with an opening 3 therethrough by means of a concave wall 4, which forms, with the adjacent end portions of said head, tubular passages 5. The front portion 6 of the inclosure forming the head has a slot or opening 7 therethrough at the center, and extending parallel to the front portion 6 of the inclosure is a spring drum or cylinder 8, with a shaft 9 projecting longitudinally through the center thereof and having angular terminals 10, fitted in bearings 11 on the inner sides of the ends of the heads. A spring 12 surrounds the shaft 9 and has one terminal secured to the latter and the opposite terminal attached to the drum or cylinder, as clearly shown by Fig. 2, said drum or cylinder having an end cap 13 for convenience in assembling the parts set forth and contained therein. Wound in opposite directions on the outer surface of the drum or cylinder 8, near the ends of the latter, are cord branches 14, which are terminally secured to the ends of the cylinder and are movable through the passages 5, the said branches being connected to a single strand 15 in the tubular handle 2. The end of the handle 2 opposite that connecting with the head is practically closed and has a central opening 16 therein, through which the single strand 15 movably passes andisattachedtoapull-ring17. Securelyfastoned on the drum or cylinder 8 to rotate therewith is a circular brush 18, which moves through the slot 7 and opening 3 and is always held in one position in relation to the head by moving through the said slot to avoid liability of shifting of the said brush on the drum or cylinder.
To assist in holding the improved device in applied position, the handle 2 near its rear end is formed with an outwardly-projecting finger-guard 19, against which the operator presses the fingers of one hand to hold the brush steady during the operation thereof.
In the operation of the device the brush 18 is applied to the type desired to be cleaned and held firmlyin place by the operator grasping the handle 2 with one hand, and after the brush is so applied the pull-ring 17 is engaged and the strand 15, together with the branches 14, is drawn rearwardly to unwind the branches from the drum or cylinder 8 to rotate the latter and the brush, and by such rotation of the drum or cylinder and brush the spring 12 is tightly wound or contracted. lVhen the strand 15 and branches 14 have been drawn backwardly or rearwardly their full extent, the pull-ring 17 is released, and the spring in unwinding rotates the drum or cylinder and the brush 18 in a reverse direction and at the same time again winds a portion of the cord branches 14, as shown by Fig. 1. The improved device is not limited in its use to cleaning type, as it can be applied to other parts of the machine with equal efficiency in performing the cleaning operation, and it is proposed to shape the handle and head in such manner that application of the improved device can be made to different parts of a type-writing machine without ob-.
struction or difficulty. Furthermore, the parts of the improved device can be made very small and compact to permit the brush to be applied to parts having a location difficult to reach by large cumbersome brushes-- such, for instance, as between the type-bars or at the joints of the latter.
The material used in the manufacture of the improved device will be of that nature best adapted for the purpose, and instead of cords wires may be substituted for actuating the drum, and, furthermore, such other changes will be made in the general con.- struction of the device as may be found necessary and fully within the scope of the invention.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A device of the class set forth, comprising a support having a tubular handle, a
drum rotatably mounted in the support and having means for automatically operating it in one direction, a brush carried by the drum, and pull means engaging the drum on opposite sides of the brush and extended through the tubular handle.
2. A device of the class set forth, comprising a support having a tubular handle, a spring -actuated drum carrying a central brush, and a pull device having two strands engaging the drum on opposite sides of the brush and continued into one strand which is movably projected through the tubular handle and operative from the rear end of the latter.
