N0 MODEL.
W17 NESSES ATTORNEY.
UNTTnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GIDEON M. LOFTISS, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
CALF-WEANER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 722,119, dated March 3, 1903.
Application filed June 2, 1902. Serial No. 109,980. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, GIDEoN M. LoFTIss, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calf-Weaners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in calf-weaners, my object being to provide a device of this class which shall be simple in construction, economical in cost, reliable, durable, and efficient in use; and to these ends the invention consists of the features, arrangements, and combinations hereinafter described and claimed, all of which will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view showing my improved device applied. Fig. 2 is a front view of the device, shown in detail and on a larger scale. Figs. 3 and 4 are sections taken on the lines a: 00 and y y, respectively.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate a flat piece of material or plate composed of wood, metal, or any other suitable material of sufficient strength and durability. Upon this plate are mounted two arms 6 and 7, whose inner extremities are connected with the plate by a screw or bolt 8, which passes through registering openings formed in the connected parts. A nut 9 is applied to this bolt to hold it securely in place. The bolt also projects beyond the nut and is sharpened, as shown at 8. The arm 7 is stationary, being secured to the plate 5 by a rivet 10, located intermediate the extremities of the arm. The arm 6 is held in place by a nut 13, screwed down upon a washer 14. The surface of the part 6 is roughened, corrugated, or toothed on its side adjacent the part 5 to prevent it from slipping when adjusted. The outer extremities of the arms are ball-shaped, as shown at 6 and 7 When the device is in use, these ball extremities are inserted in the nostrils of the animal and the arm 6 moved to cause the extremities 6 and 7 to grip the separatingcartilage of the nostrils sufficiently tight to hold the device securely in place. The nut 13 is then tightened, whereby the device is locked in position with the part 5 hanging directly in front of the animals mouth. The function of the sharpened part 8" of the screw is to prick the cow as the calf tries to suck, whereby the cow will refuse to stand. This part has also a further function, since it will prick the nose of the calf if it is thrown upwardly and turned over in the endeavor to throw it from its normal position in front of the mouth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a plate adapted to occupy a position in front of the animals mouth, two arms pivoted at one extremity on the plate and projecting therefrom, their free extremities projecting toward each other and terminating in ball-shaped ends, one of the arms being slotted transversely to its length intermediate its extremities to permit adjustment, and a fastening device passed through the plate and said slotand arranged to lock the slotted arm in the adjusted position, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a mouth-plate, two curved arms whose inner extremities are connected with the plate and whose outer extremities project toward each other and are ball-shaped, one arm being stationary and the other arm being enlarged transversely to its length and slotted, its enlarged partbeing toothed or roughened on the inside Where it engages the plate, and a screw passed through the plate and the said slot, and means applied to the screw for holding the plate in place.
3. In a calf-weaner, the combination of a mouthpiece, two curved arms having overlapping inner extremities, a bolt passing through registering apertures formed in the In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GIDEON M. LOFTISS.

DENA NELSON,
passed through the slot into said plate. I A. J. OBRIEN.
